The issue of Roupei?
Hello, Doctor! I always thought that taking PrEP (PrEP is often referred to as "柔沛" in Taiwan) had no side effects for me, particularly regarding sexual function.
I have been taking it for nearly four years, but recently, when I wanted to be intimate with my new girlfriend, I realized that side effects had indeed developed.
So, I stopped taking the medication immediately! It has been over two months since I stopped, and I have noticed significant improvement! However, while I can achieve an erection and it is firm enough, I tend to lose rigidity whenever I attempt to penetrate.
Doctor, will the side effects of PrEP disappear? How long will it take? Will having taken it for so long affect the recovery time or make recovery impossible? Please help clarify my concerns! I'm quite worried.

Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology
The side effects of Ropinirole should gradually subside.
If there is no improvement after 4 months, it is advisable to consult a urologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Ropinirole, marketed under the brand name Requip, is a medication primarily used to treat Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome. While it is effective for these conditions, it can have a range of side effects, including those affecting sexual function. It is not uncommon for patients taking Ropinirole to experience sexual dysfunction, which can manifest as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or difficulties with orgasm.
In your case, it seems that you have been taking Ropinirole for nearly four years without noticing any adverse effects on your sexual function until recently. This delayed onset of side effects is not unusual, as some individuals may not experience side effects until they have been on a medication for an extended period. The fact that you have noticed a significant improvement in your sexual function after discontinuing the medication is encouraging. However, it is important to understand that recovery from medication-induced sexual dysfunction can vary significantly from person to person.
When you stop taking Ropinirole, the time it takes for side effects to resolve can depend on several factors, including the duration of use, the dosage, individual physiology, and overall health. Generally, it may take a few weeks to several months for the body to readjust and for sexual function to return to baseline levels. In some cases, individuals may experience lingering effects even after stopping the medication, but many find that their sexual function gradually improves over time.
Regarding your specific concerns about losing erection during intercourse, this can be attributed to several factors, including psychological aspects, anxiety about performance, or residual effects of the medication. It is not uncommon for individuals who have experienced sexual dysfunction to develop anxiety surrounding sexual performance, which can further exacerbate the issue. This cycle can be challenging to break, but it is important to approach the situation with patience and understanding.
If you find that your sexual function does not continue to improve or if you experience ongoing difficulties, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional. They can help assess your situation more thoroughly and may suggest options such as counseling, therapy, or other medications that can assist with erectile dysfunction. Additionally, lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a healthy diet, and stress management techniques, can also contribute positively to sexual health.
In summary, while Ropinirole can have side effects related to sexual function, many individuals experience improvement after discontinuing the medication. The timeline for recovery can vary, but with time and appropriate support, many find that their sexual function returns to normal. If you have ongoing concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.
