Left ear issue?
Hello, Doctor.
Recently, I've been experiencing some issues with my left ear.
Five days ago, I noticed that external sounds would cause a vibrating sensation inside my ear, which felt tingly.
However, this sensation would disappear in the evening when it was quiet.
Three days ago, it seemed to have improved, but in the last few days, I've been feeling a sense of fullness and pressure in my ear.
When I yawn, I hear sounds similar to earwax being torn, like "pop" and "hiss." The most bothersome sensation is a tingling feeling near the outer part of my ear canal, which is very distressing.
I visited a nearby ENT specialist, who examined me and measured my ear pressure.
He said there were no issues with the outer or middle ear and suspected it might be an inner ear problem.
He prescribed some medication, but the tingling sensation in the outer ear persists and is quite uncomfortable.
I'm unsure if I should visit another hospital or just wait and observe for a few more days.
Thank you, Doctor.

Hello: In response to your question, it may be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction.
I recommend an outpatient examination.

More Info
Hello! Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your left ear issues. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that could be related to various underlying conditions affecting the ear. Let's break down your symptoms and explore possible diagnoses and treatment options.
Symptoms Overview
1. Vibrational Sensation: You mentioned feeling vibrations in your ear in response to external sounds, which could indicate a heightened sensitivity or a condition known as hyperacusis. This condition can occur when the auditory system becomes overly sensitive to sound stimuli.
2. Pressure and Fullness: The sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear, especially when yawning, is often associated with Eustachian tube dysfunction. This tube helps equalize pressure in the middle ear, and if it is not functioning properly, it can lead to feelings of fullness or discomfort.
3. Popping or Crackling Sounds: The sounds you describe, like "啵啵" or "嘶嘶," during yawning could be related to the movement of the Eustachian tube or changes in pressure within the ear. This is often normal but can be exacerbated by allergies, sinus issues, or infections.
4. Numbness or Tingling Sensation: The "麻麻" feeling you experience in the outer ear could be due to nerve irritation or inflammation in the area. This could be related to a variety of factors, including allergies, inflammation, or even referred sensations from nearby structures.
Possible Diagnoses
Given your symptoms and the fact that your doctor has ruled out issues in the outer and middle ear, the following conditions may be considered:
- Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: This is a common issue where the Eustachian tube does not open properly, leading to pressure changes and discomfort.
- Inner Ear Disorders: Conditions such as Meniere's disease or vestibular disorders can cause sensations of fullness, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and balance issues.
- Allergic Rhinitis: If you have a history of allergies, this could contribute to inflammation and fluid buildup in the ear, leading to your symptoms.
- Neurological Issues: Although less common, certain neurological conditions can cause abnormal sensations in the ear.
Recommended Actions
1. Follow-Up with an ENT Specialist: Since your current doctor has suggested that the issue may be related to the inner ear, it would be prudent to seek a second opinion from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They may conduct further tests, such as audiometry or imaging studies, to get a clearer picture of what is happening.
2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, noting any changes or patterns. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider.
3. Consider Allergy Management: If you have allergies, managing them with antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may help alleviate some of your symptoms.
4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from loud noises and irritants that could exacerbate your symptoms, and avoid inserting anything into your ear canal.
5. Hydration and Steam Inhalation: Staying hydrated and using steam inhalation may help open up the Eustachian tubes and relieve pressure.
Conclusion
Your symptoms warrant further investigation, especially since they have persisted and are causing you discomfort. A thorough evaluation by an ENT specialist can help clarify the diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment. In the meantime, managing any underlying allergies and monitoring your symptoms will be beneficial. Don’t hesitate to seek help if your symptoms worsen or if you experience new symptoms. Your health and comfort are paramount, and it’s important to address these concerns promptly.
