Knee pain
About six months ago, I started experiencing pain in my left knee after walking.
I visited an outpatient clinic, and the doctor said that the cartilage in my knee was worn down.
I later took shark cartilage supplements, but the pain did not improve.
Recently, at night while sleeping, I have been experiencing severe pain in the bones from my knees down to my ankles, to the point where I cannot sleep.
I can only sleep after taking painkillers.
I researched online and am worried that I might have bone cancer.
I'm really scared because it typically affects young people aged 12 to 20, and one of the most common symptoms of bone cancer is bone pain, which is more pronounced at night than during the day.
If I really have it, what would the treatment be?

Hello, shark cartilage is not very helpful for cartilage wear.
As for the symptoms you described, they do not resemble bone cancer, as bone cancer typically occurs in a single location and rarely affects both sides.
However, for safety's sake, it is best to consult an orthopedic physician.

More Info
Knee pain can be a complex issue with various underlying causes, and it is understandable that you are concerned about your symptoms, especially given your history of cartilage wear and the recent increase in pain. Let's explore the potential causes of your knee pain, the concerns you have regarding bone cancer, and the treatment options available.
Understanding Knee Pain
1. Causes of Knee Pain:
- Cartilage Wear: As you mentioned, your doctor diagnosed you with cartilage wear, which is often associated with osteoarthritis. This condition occurs when the cartilage that cushions the knee joint deteriorates, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness.
- Tendinitis or Bursitis: Inflammation of the tendons or bursae around the knee can also cause pain, particularly after activity.
- Meniscus Tears: If you have experienced any twisting injuries, a tear in the meniscus (the cartilage in the knee) could be a possibility.
- Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in the knee can be referred from other areas, such as the hip or lower back.
2. Concerns About Bone Cancer:
- While it is true that bone cancer can cause significant pain, especially at night, it is relatively rare. The typical age range for primary bone cancers, such as osteosarcoma, is indeed younger individuals (ages 10-20). However, there are many other more common causes of knee pain, particularly in adults, such as arthritis or overuse injuries.
- Symptoms of bone cancer can include localized pain, swelling, and sometimes a palpable mass. If you are experiencing persistent pain that worsens at night and is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Treatment Options
1. Medical Evaluation:
- Given your symptoms, it is essential to revisit your healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays or an MRI to assess the condition of your knee and rule out any serious underlying issues, including tumors.
2. Pain Management:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like NSAIDs (ibuprofen or naproxen) can help manage pain and inflammation. However, if these are not effective, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications.
- If you are experiencing significant discomfort at night, discussing a pain management plan with your doctor is advisable.
3. Physical Therapy:
- Engaging in physical therapy can be beneficial. A physical therapist can design a program to strengthen the muscles around the knee, improve flexibility, and enhance overall function, which may alleviate some of the pain.
4. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Weight management can significantly impact knee pain, especially if you are overweight. Reducing stress on the knee joint can help alleviate symptoms.
- Low-impact exercises such as swimming or cycling can maintain fitness without exacerbating knee pain.
5. Alternative Treatments:
- Some patients find relief through alternative treatments such as acupuncture, massage therapy, or dietary supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin. However, the efficacy of these treatments can vary from person to person.
6. Surgical Options:
- In cases where conservative treatments fail, surgical options such as arthroscopy, osteotomy, or knee replacement may be considered, depending on the severity of the cartilage damage and overall knee function.
Conclusion
While your symptoms are concerning, it is essential to approach them systematically. Start by consulting with your healthcare provider to rule out serious conditions like bone cancer and to discuss your ongoing pain. They can guide you through appropriate imaging and treatment options tailored to your specific situation. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don't hesitate to seek help.
