Severe Cold Symptoms: When to Seek ENT Help - Otolaryngology

I have been sick for the past two days! I'm in a lot of pain! Please, doctor... help me!!

I've been feeling unwell lately with a cold, so I went to see a doctor.
I asked if they could prescribe a stronger medication, and the doctor said "yes," but warned that it might make me feel more drowsy.
I'm not sure why that is! It feels like I'm getting worse instead of better—maybe it's just in my head? For the past two days, I've been experiencing dizziness every day.
I'm not sure if it qualifies as dizziness, but it feels like the sensation you get when you sleep from 9 PM to 4 or 5 PM the next day and wake up feeling groggy! My neck hurts when I tilt it back, and more seriously, my eyes feel sore when I move them up and down or side to side! Doctor, what is wrong with me? I feel really uncomfortable! I'm taking my medication three times a day, so why am I still in so much pain? I feel dizzy, and everything I look at seems strange...
Am I suffering from some serious illness? I'm really worried...
I'm taking cold medicine regularly and trying to rest, but this discomfort is unbearable.
Please, doctor! Help me! It's just a cold—how can it cause so much suffering?

Dr. Ye Dawei reply Otolaryngology

Student Chen, taking cold medicine may make you feel drowsy, likely because it contains antihistamines.
Your symptoms could be indicative of a cold.
I recommend that you drink plenty of water, replenish with rich nutrients, and get more sleep and rest.
You may also visit my clinic for a consultation.
Clinic hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.

It sounds like you're experiencing a range of distressing symptoms that are causing you significant discomfort and concern. Based on your description, it seems that you are dealing with severe cold symptoms, which may be exacerbated by anxiety and possibly other underlying health issues. Let's break down your symptoms and discuss when it might be appropriate to seek help from an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Severe Cold Symptoms: Common cold symptoms can include nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, fatigue, and sometimes headaches. However, when these symptoms become severe or persistent, it may indicate a more serious condition, such as a sinus infection or other respiratory issues.

2. Dizziness and Fatigue: The dizziness you describe, especially after long periods of sleep, could be related to several factors. It might be due to dehydration, lack of proper nutrition, or even the side effects of medications you are taking. Feeling fatigued and experiencing dizziness can also be symptoms of anxiety, which can amplify the perception of physical discomfort.

3. Neck Pain and Eye Discomfort: The neck pain you experience when pressing backward could be related to muscle tension, which is common when one is feeling unwell or anxious. Eye discomfort, especially if you feel strain or pain when moving your eyes, could be a result of fatigue or prolonged screen time, but it can also be a symptom of sinus pressure or headaches.

When to Seek ENT Help
You should consider seeking help from an ENT specialist if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent Symptoms: If your cold symptoms last longer than 10 days without improvement, it may indicate a bacterial infection that requires treatment.

- Severe Pain: If you experience severe pain in your sinuses, ears, or throat that does not respond to over-the-counter medications, it’s time to consult a specialist.

- Dizziness and Balance Issues: If your dizziness is accompanied by balance issues, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears, an ENT can help determine if there is an underlying issue related to your inner ear or sinuses.

- Changes in Vision: If you notice significant changes in your vision or persistent eye pain, it’s essential to seek medical attention as this could indicate a more serious condition.

Managing Your Symptoms
While waiting for your appointment or if you decide to manage your symptoms at home, consider the following:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucus and stay hydrated, which can alleviate some symptoms of a cold.

- Rest: Ensure you are getting enough rest. Sleep is crucial for recovery, and your body needs time to heal.

- Over-the-Counter Medications: If your doctor has prescribed stronger medications, be sure to follow their instructions. If you feel that the medications are making you feel worse, discuss this with your healthcare provider.

- Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to your face can help relieve sinus pressure and pain.

- Relaxation Techniques: If anxiety is contributing to your symptoms, consider practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or gentle yoga.

Conclusion
It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed when experiencing multiple symptoms that affect your daily life. While colds are common, severe or prolonged symptoms warrant further investigation. An ENT specialist can provide a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment options. Remember, it’s essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about all your symptoms and concerns, as this will help them provide the best care for you. Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
