There are sometimes lumps on the left side of the neck?
Hello: I'm not sure where to ask this, so I'm reaching out to you.
Sometimes when I eat, I suddenly feel that the left side of my neck, near the jawline, starts to harden.
If I stop eating at that moment, the lump will go away.
If I ignore it and continue eating, the lump becomes harder, swells, and becomes painful.
It usually takes about a night for the swelling to subside.
What could be the reason for this?

Dr. Zeng Fenyu reply Internal Medicine
It could be related to the neck muscles, but please visit the outpatient clinic for a thorough diagnosis by a physician to confirm that the lump is benign.

Understanding hard lumps on the left side of the neck, particularly those that appear during eating and subside when food intake is halted, can be concerning. The symptoms you've described suggest a few potential causes, and it’s important to consider various factors that could contribute to this condition.
One possible explanation for the hard lump you feel could be related to the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes in the neck can become swollen due to various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or even benign conditions. When you eat, the act of chewing and swallowing can stimulate the lymphatic system, potentially causing lymph nodes to react and swell temporarily. If you have any underlying infections, such as a dental issue or throat infection, this could exacerbate the swelling.
Another possibility is that the hard lump is related to muscle tension or spasms in the neck. The muscles in the neck can become tense due to stress, poor posture, or repetitive movements. When you chew, these muscles are engaged, and if they are already tight, this could lead to a sensation of hardness or discomfort. Additionally, if you have a habit of clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth, this could contribute to muscle tension in the neck area.
Furthermore, the presence of a hard lump could also indicate the formation of a cyst or a benign tumor, such as a lipoma, which is a fatty growth that can occur in various parts of the body, including the neck. These lumps are usually painless and can fluctuate in size depending on various factors, including activity and body position.
In some cases, the hard lump could be associated with salivary glands. The submandibular gland, located beneath the jaw, can become blocked or inflamed, leading to swelling and discomfort, especially during meals when saliva production increases. This condition is known as sialadenitis or a salivary gland stone (sialolithiasis), which can cause pain and swelling in the area.
Given the symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. A physical examination, along with imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan, may be necessary to determine the exact cause of the hard lump. Blood tests may also be conducted to check for signs of infection or inflammation.
In the meantime, you can try some self-care measures to alleviate discomfort. Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Additionally, practicing good oral hygiene and staying hydrated can support overall health and may help prevent infections that could lead to swollen lymph nodes.
In conclusion, the hard lump on the left side of your neck could be due to several factors, including lymph node swelling, muscle tension, salivary gland issues, or benign growths. It is crucial to seek medical advice to obtain an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and provide peace of mind regarding your health.
