Armpit Pain: Causes and Concerns for Tight Clothing - Surgery

Regarding the armpit..?

Yesterday, I went out wearing a somewhat tight t-shirt, and I kept feeling pain in my right armpit.
It felt like something was there, and when I got home, I discovered a small lump in my armpit, about the size of a green bean.
It hurts when I press on it, and it still feels the same today.
What could this be? P.S.
I have hyperhidrosis and I also pluck my underarm hair.
Could this be related?

Dr. Huang Zhihui reply Surgery

Based on your description, it is likely a "sebaceous cyst," which is a common benign tumor that contains secretions from sebaceous glands.
Sometimes, it may be associated with bacterial infection, leading to purulent discharge, and it should not have a direct relation to hyperhidrosis or axillary hair removal.
If there is evidence of bacterial infection, antibiotic treatment is necessary, while the sebaceous cyst can only be removed surgically.
However, it is still advisable for you to have a physician examine it.

More Info

Armpit pain, especially when accompanied by a noticeable lump, can be concerning and warrants careful consideration. Based on your description, it seems that you may be experiencing a condition known as a sebaceous cyst or a lymph node enlargement, particularly since you mentioned the lump is small and painful to the touch.

Possible Causes of Armpit Pain and Lump
1. Sebaceous Cyst: These are common and usually harmless lumps that can develop in the skin, including the armpit area. They occur when the sebaceous glands become blocked, leading to the accumulation of sebum. They can become inflamed or infected, which may cause pain.

2. Lymphadenopathy: The armpit (axillary) region contains lymph nodes that can become swollen due to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. If you have had any recent infections, such as a cold or skin infection, this could explain the swollen lymph nodes.

3. Hidradenitis Suppurativa: This is a chronic skin condition that causes painful lumps under the skin, often in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits. It can lead to abscesses and scarring.

4. Injury or Irritation: Tight clothing, as you mentioned, can cause friction and irritation in the armpit area, leading to pain and discomfort. If you have been wearing tight clothing or have been active, this could contribute to your symptoms.

5. Other Skin Conditions: Conditions such as folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) or contact dermatitis (skin irritation from contact with an allergen or irritant) could also cause pain and lumps in the armpit area.

Connection to Hyperhidrosis and Hair Removal
You mentioned having hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and that you also remove armpit hair. Both of these factors can contribute to skin irritation and the development of lumps. Excessive sweating can lead to clogged pores and skin infections, while hair removal can cause irritation or ingrown hairs, which may result in painful lumps.

Recommendations
1. Observation: If the lump does not resolve within a few days or if it increases in size, becomes more painful, or shows signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or discharge), you should seek medical attention.

2. Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing looser clothing can help reduce friction and irritation in the armpit area.

3. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the area may help reduce pain and promote drainage if it is a cyst or an infected lymph node.

4. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene in the armpit area to prevent infections. If you sweat excessively, consider using antiperspirants designed for hyperhidrosis.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the pain persists or worsens, or if you have any other concerning symptoms (such as fever or systemic symptoms), it is important to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies or a biopsy if necessary.

In summary, while the symptoms you describe could be due to a variety of benign conditions, it is essential to monitor the situation closely and seek medical advice if there are any changes or if the symptoms do not improve. Your health and comfort are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide tailored advice and treatment options based on a comprehensive assessment.
