Shoulder, neck, and headache pain?
Hello: I have recently been experiencing shoulder and neck pain, which sometimes becomes severe enough to cause headaches.
What could be the cause of this? I have a cyst in my chest (which I have checked annually), and I often experience breast tenderness before my menstrual period.
I wonder if I can use traditional Chinese medicine for treatment? (I am allergic to Western medicine, so I am hesitant to take it.) Thank you!

Dear online friend,
1.
Experiencing shoulder and neck pain that sometimes escalates to headaches may be caused by excessive work or life stress.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) suggests that acupuncture at points such as Taiyang, Baihui, and Jianjing can help alleviate this.
In my clinical practice, I also differentiate symptoms to provide herbs for soothing the liver and relieving depression or for external release of Taiyang, which have shown good results.
It is advisable to seek treatment from a qualified TCM practitioner.
2.
If there is a cyst in the breast, it is important to continue regular follow-up examinations such as mammography every year (this examination is available at our hospital).
This is to prevent malignant tumors.
Breast tenderness and swelling before menstruation may indicate premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which can be managed with herbal medicine.
In my clinical experience, I have found that herbs for soothing the liver and relieving depression are effective, and I recommend consulting a qualified TCM practitioner for treatment.
3.
It is advisable to rest more, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, consume plenty of fruits and vegetables, and undergo necessary health check-ups to maintain your health.
Wishing you well,
Dr.

Shoulder and neck pain can be quite debilitating, especially when it escalates to the point of causing headaches and dizziness. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of musculoskeletal discomfort and possibly some hormonal influences related to your menstrual cycle. Given your history of a chest cyst and your sensitivity to Western medications, exploring Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) could be a viable option for you.
In TCM, shoulder and neck pain is often attributed to "Qi" stagnation, blood stasis, or a deficiency of "Yin" or "Yang." The meridians associated with the shoulder and neck areas are closely linked to the liver, gallbladder, and kidney systems. Therefore, a TCM practitioner would likely conduct a thorough assessment, including pulse and tongue diagnosis, to determine the underlying imbalances in your body.
For your shoulder and neck pain, TCM treatments may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and possibly dietary recommendations. Acupuncture can help relieve pain by stimulating specific points along the meridians, promoting blood circulation, and alleviating muscle tension. Herbal formulas may be tailored to your specific symptoms, focusing on dispelling wind, resolving phlegm, and nourishing the blood. Common herbs that might be included are "Chuan Xiong" (Ligusticum chuanxiong), known for its ability to invigorate blood circulation, and "Dang Gui" (Angelica sinensis), which nourishes the blood and can help with menstrual-related symptoms.
In addition to acupuncture and herbal remedies, TCM also emphasizes lifestyle modifications. Gentle exercises such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong can improve flexibility and promote relaxation, which may alleviate some of the tension in your neck and shoulders. Furthermore, maintaining good posture, especially if you spend long hours at a desk, is crucial. Ergonomic adjustments to your workspace can help reduce strain on your neck and shoulders.
Regarding your breast discomfort related to your menstrual cycle, TCM can also provide supportive treatments. The chest area is often treated with herbs that promote circulation and relieve stagnation. Formulas that include "Xiang Fu" (Cyperus rotundus) may help regulate your menstrual cycle and alleviate breast tenderness.
It is essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can provide a personalized treatment plan based on your specific symptoms and health history. They can also monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed. Since you have allergies to Western medications, it's crucial to communicate this to your TCM practitioner so they can avoid any herbs that may cause adverse reactions.
In summary, TCM offers a holistic approach to managing shoulder and neck pain, particularly for individuals who are sensitive to Western medications. By addressing the root causes of your discomfort and providing supportive treatments, TCM can help restore balance to your body and improve your overall well-being. Always ensure that you are working with licensed practitioners and that any herbal treatments are safe and appropriate for your condition.
