White Discharge and Redness Around the Glans: Causes and Concerns - Urology

Regarding the issue of the foreskin surrounding the glans penis?

For the past four days, I have noticed a whitish discharge between my glans and foreskin, which appears yellow when wiped with tissue, resembling pus.
Additionally, there is redness around the foreskin near the glans, which looks swollen.
My sexual life has been monogamous with only my girlfriend, and although the swelling has somewhat decreased, the discharge persists, and I occasionally experience itching.
However, there is no pain in my penis.
Could you please help me understand what might be causing this? Note: This condition appeared suddenly, and there has been a significant gap of over a month since my last sexual activity.
Thank you.

Ye Ling, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/10/03

Could it be a fungal infection? I suggest you visit a hospital and consult a urologist.

The symptoms you are describing, including the white discharge and redness around the glans (the head of the penis), could be indicative of a few potential conditions, most commonly infections or inflammatory responses. Here’s a breakdown of possible causes and concerns regarding your symptoms:
1. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by poor hygiene, irritants, or infections. Symptoms typically include redness, swelling, and discharge. The discharge can sometimes appear yellow or white, and itching may also occur. Balanitis can be caused by yeast infections, bacterial infections, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

2. Yeast Infection: A common cause of discharge and irritation in males is a yeast infection, particularly if there is an overgrowth of Candida. This can lead to symptoms such as redness, itching, and a thick, white discharge. It’s important to note that yeast infections can occur in men, especially if they have diabetes or are on antibiotics.

3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, can cause discharge and inflammation. Although you mentioned that your sexual activity has been limited to one partner, it’s still possible to contract an STI if your partner is asymptomatic or has been previously exposed.

4. Contact Dermatitis: This condition can occur due to irritation from soaps, lotions, or even condoms. If you have recently changed any products that come into contact with your genital area, this could lead to redness and discharge.

5. Phimosis: If the foreskin is too tight and cannot be easily retracted, it can lead to inflammation and discharge. This condition can also contribute to hygiene issues, leading to infections.

Recommendations:
- Seek Medical Attention: It is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. A doctor may perform a physical examination and possibly take samples of the discharge for laboratory testing to determine the exact cause.

- Maintain Hygiene: Ensure that you are keeping the area clean and dry. Gently wash the area with mild soap and water, and avoid using harsh soaps or products that may irritate the skin.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that a product may be causing irritation, stop using it and see if your symptoms improve.

- Abstain from Sexual Activity: Until you have been evaluated by a healthcare provider, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent potential transmission of an infection.

- Follow Treatment Recommendations: If diagnosed with an infection, follow your healthcare provider’s treatment plan, which may include antifungal or antibiotic medications.

Conclusion:
While the symptoms you are experiencing can be concerning, they are treatable with the right medical intervention. It is essential to address these symptoms promptly to avoid complications and ensure your overall health. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and sexual history is vital for effective diagnosis and treatment.
