glans penis
Hello, Dr.
Hsu: Over the past two weeks, I have noticed a red, swollen spot on my glans that resembles a mosquito bite.
It is neither painful nor itchy, measuring about 0.3 centimeters.
There were initially two spots very close to each other; one has already disappeared, and there is still one remaining.
Could this be a fungal infection? I occasionally experience mild athlete's foot and a couple of spots of dyshidrotic eczema on the soles of my feet.
Alternatively, could it be an insect bite? I started adopting a cat about a year ago, and sometimes I feel like I've been bitten while sleeping.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, it is possible that the issue is caused by insect bites or a localized bacterial infection.
Recommendations: 1.
After contact with animals, make sure to wash your hands with soap at least twice, ideally up to the elbows.
2.
After contact with animals, wash clothing separately, or if possible, use slightly warm water for disinfection.
3.
Avoid allowing animals into the bedroom, especially contact with the bed and bedding.
4.
If possible, bathe pets regularly.
5.
Apply appropriate ointments to the affected area.
6.
Ultimately, it is best to consult a physician and listen to their advice.

More Info
When it comes to red bumps on the glans (the head of the penis), there are several potential causes to consider. Based on your description, it sounds like you have developed small, red, raised bumps that are not painful or itchy, which is a positive sign. Here are some possible explanations for your symptoms:
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur anywhere on the body, including the genital area. It can be caused by irritation, infection, or even friction from clothing. If the bumps are small and red, this could be a likely cause.
2. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, contact dermatitis can occur due to an allergic reaction to soaps, lotions, or even laundry detergents. If you have recently changed any products that come into contact with your genital area, this could be a factor.
3. Insect Bites: Given that you mentioned feeling like you’ve been bitten, it’s possible that these bumps could be insect bites. Fleas, mosquitoes, or other insects can cause localized swelling and redness.
4. Fungal Infection: While you mentioned having mild athlete's foot (tinea pedis) and sweat blisters, a fungal infection could potentially spread to other areas, including the genital region. However, fungal infections typically present with itching and scaling, which you have not described.
5. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the glans and are completely normal anatomical variations. They are not a sign of infection or disease.
6. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), genital warts can appear as small, flesh-colored or red bumps. They are typically painless and may not cause any discomfort. However, they usually have a different appearance than what you described.
7. Other Dermatoses: Conditions like lichen planus or psoriasis can also cause red bumps or lesions on the genital area, but these usually come with additional symptoms such as itching or scaling.
Given that one of the bumps has already resolved and the other is not causing pain or itching, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, it is essential to monitor the situation. If the bump persists, changes in appearance, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as pain, itching, or discharge), it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination.
In terms of your concerns about fungal infections and insect bites, maintaining good hygiene and keeping the area dry can help prevent fungal infections. If you suspect insect bites, consider checking your living environment for pests, especially since you mentioned having a cat.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for the red bumps on your glans, many of them are benign. However, if you have any doubts or if the symptoms change, seeking medical advice is always the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
