Ptosis
I recently saw reports about Bai Bingbing, and I realized that the doctor she consulted is the same one I went to for my ptosis surgery.
Unfortunately, my results were not ideal; my eyelids still droop.
I would like to ask if, after having undergone three surgeries already, I should attempt a fourth one? I am really afraid that a fourth surgery might make things worse.
My ptosis has caused me to have amblyopia, so does this mean that if my ptosis is not corrected, there will be no hope for improvement? Seeing that Bai Bingbing's niece had her eyes treated successfully has rekindled my hope.
I hope the doctor can provide me with answers and also recommend a hospital where I can undergo surgery, as I am truly scared of failing again! Thank you!

Hello: The human body is not like a machine where all parts have absolute specifications and sizes.
Even the organs on the left and right sides of the same patient are not completely identical, let alone between different patients.
I believe most surgeons hope to perform their surgeries to the best of their ability.
I am sorry to hear about your situation; perhaps you could inquire about the doctor who successfully treated Bai Bingbing's niece and see if they can provide a better solution.
Sincerely, Dr.
Wang Zhangji, Ophthalmology.

Eyelid ptosis, or drooping of the eyelids, can be a frustrating condition, especially after multiple surgeries that have not yielded the desired results. Your concerns about the effectiveness of further surgical interventions are valid and shared by many patients in similar situations.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that eyelid ptosis can arise from various causes, including congenital factors, aging, or neurological issues. The surgical approach to correct ptosis typically involves tightening the muscles that lift the eyelid or removing excess skin. However, the success of these surgeries can vary significantly based on the underlying cause of the ptosis, the surgical technique used, and the individual’s healing response.
Given that you have already undergone three surgeries without satisfactory results, it’s understandable to feel apprehensive about a fourth attempt. Each surgery carries inherent risks, including the possibility of complications such as infection, scarring, or even worsening of the condition. It’s crucial to have a thorough discussion with your ophthalmic surgeon about the potential benefits and risks of another surgery. They should provide a detailed assessment of why previous surgeries may not have been successful and what a fourth surgery would entail.
In terms of your concern about developing amblyopia (or "lazy eye") due to untreated ptosis, it is indeed possible. If the eyelid droops significantly, it can obstruct vision, particularly in children, leading to amblyopia. In adults, while the risk is lower, persistent ptosis can still cause visual disturbances and affect quality of life. Therefore, addressing the ptosis is essential not only for cosmetic reasons but also for functional vision.
As for your hope inspired by the success of others, such as the case of Bai Bing Bing’s niece, it’s important to remember that each individual’s anatomy and response to surgery are unique. What works for one person may not work for another. However, this does not mean that improvement is impossible.
If you are considering a fourth surgery, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from a different ophthalmic surgeon, preferably one who specializes in eyelid surgery or oculoplastic surgery. They can provide a fresh perspective on your case and may suggest alternative techniques or approaches that have not been previously considered. Look for surgeons affiliated with reputable medical centers or those who have a strong track record in treating eyelid ptosis.
In conclusion, while the prospect of another surgery can be daunting, it is essential to weigh the potential benefits against the risks. Open communication with your healthcare provider, exploring all available options, and possibly seeking a second opinion can help you make an informed decision about your next steps. Remember, the goal is not only to achieve a cosmetic improvement but also to ensure that your vision is not compromised. Your journey may be challenging, but with the right support and expertise, there is hope for improvement.
