Nasal mucus issues
I previously had surgery for sinusitis, and since then, I often have mucus stuck between my nose and esophagus that I can't cough or clear out, which is very uncomfortable.
Seeing a doctor hasn't helped.
Additionally, my tinnitus has not improved.
Could these be residual effects of sinusitis?

Post-sinus surgery symptoms can be quite complex and may vary significantly from patient to patient. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience lingering symptoms after undergoing surgery for sinusitis or other related conditions. In your case, the presence of mucus that feels stuck in the throat and persistent tinnitus (ear ringing) can be distressing and may indeed be related to your previous sinus issues.
Understanding Mucus Retention
After sinus surgery, it is normal for patients to experience changes in mucus production and drainage. The surgery often aims to improve airflow and drainage in the sinuses, but the healing process can lead to temporary changes in how mucus is produced and cleared. Here are a few points to consider regarding your symptoms:
1. Post-nasal Drip: After surgery, you may experience post-nasal drip, where mucus accumulates in the back of the throat. This can lead to a sensation of mucus being stuck, which can be uncomfortable and may provoke coughing. It is essential to stay hydrated and consider using saline nasal sprays or rinses to help thin the mucus and promote drainage.
2. Healing Process: The tissues in your nasal passages and sinuses are healing, which can lead to temporary swelling and increased mucus production. This can create a feeling of congestion or blockage, even if the surgery was successful in clearing out the sinuses.
3. Nasal Irrigation: Regular nasal irrigation with saline solutions can help clear mucus and debris from the nasal passages and sinuses. This practice can be beneficial in managing symptoms and promoting healing.
Tinnitus and Its Connection to Sinus Issues
Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, can also be linked to sinus problems. The Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, can become affected by sinus inflammation or congestion. Here are some considerations regarding tinnitus:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: After sinus surgery, the Eustachian tube may not function optimally due to residual swelling or changes in pressure. This dysfunction can lead to a sensation of fullness in the ears and tinnitus.
2. Inflammation: Inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses can extend to the Eustachian tube and middle ear, potentially causing auditory symptoms. As the inflammation resolves, you may notice an improvement in your tinnitus.
3. Consultation with Specialists: If tinnitus persists, it may be beneficial to consult an ENT specialist or an audiologist. They can conduct a thorough evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your tinnitus and recommend appropriate management strategies.
When to Seek Further Medical Attention
If your symptoms of mucus retention and tinnitus do not improve or worsen over time, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may consider additional evaluations, such as imaging studies or endoscopic examinations, to assess the status of your sinuses and Eustachian tubes.
In summary, while it is possible that your symptoms are related to post-sinus surgery changes, they may also indicate other underlying issues that require further investigation. Maintaining open communication with your healthcare team and actively participating in your recovery process will be key to managing your symptoms effectively.
