Symptoms after endoscopic sinus surgery for sinusitis?

Hello, I underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for sinusitis on the 17th.
On the 20th and 21st, I experienced symptoms of bleeding and watery discharge.
However, today, the 22nd, there is still blood-tinged fluid, but I also noticed thicker mucus.
I'm hesitant to blow my nose forcefully, which has led to nasal congestion.
Later, while yawning, a thick mucus discharge came out on its own, and my nose felt clearer.
However, shortly after, my nose started to feel a bit congested again.
Should I be concerned that this indicates a failure of the surgery? Thank you.

Post-sinus surgery symptoms can often be concerning, especially when you experience bleeding, nasal congestion, and thick mucus. It's important to understand that some degree of bleeding and nasal discharge is common after sinus surgery, particularly within the first few days post-operation. The presence of blood-tinged mucus can be a normal part of the healing process, as the surgical site may still be inflamed and healing.

In your case, the initial bleeding you experienced on the 20th and 21st day post-surgery is not unusual. After sinus surgery, the nasal passages can be swollen, and the mucous membranes may be irritated, leading to increased mucus production. The fact that you noticed a thick, mucous discharge after yawning indicates that your sinuses are still clearing out post-operative debris and mucus, which is a positive sign that your body is healing.

However, the ongoing nasal congestion you are experiencing could be due to several factors. It may be a result of residual swelling in the nasal passages, the formation of crusting, or even the presence of a small amount of blood that has thickened and is causing blockage. It is crucial to avoid forceful nose blowing, as this can create pressure that may disrupt the healing process or lead to complications.

To aid your recovery, consider the following recommendations:
1. Saline Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or performing nasal irrigation with a neti pot can help keep your nasal passages moist and clear out any thick mucus. This can also help reduce swelling and promote healing.

2. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can thin mucus, making it easier to expel and reducing congestion.

3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and allergens that could further irritate your nasal passages.

4. Follow-Up Care: It's essential to keep your follow-up appointments with your ENT specialist. They can assess your healing progress and determine if any additional interventions are necessary.

5. Medications: If your doctor has prescribed medications, such as nasal corticosteroids or antihistamines, be sure to use them as directed to help manage inflammation and mucus production.

As for your concern about whether the surgery was a failure, it is too early to make that determination. Many patients experience varying degrees of symptoms during the recovery phase, and it can take several weeks for the full benefits of the surgery to be realized. If your symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience severe pain, fever, or a significant increase in nasal discharge, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while your symptoms may be uncomfortable, they are not necessarily indicative of surgical failure. With proper care and monitoring, you should continue to see improvement in your recovery. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific situation.
