I just had surgery for sinusitis (sphenoid sinusitis), but I'm feeling a bit uncomfortable?
Hello, I underwent surgery for right-sided sinusitis (sphenoid sinusitis) on August 11, 2015, and have been following my doctor's advice regarding medication and dietary recommendations, including a vegetarian diet and avoiding spicy foods.
I returned for my first follow-up appointment on August 18, 2015, where I continued to take my medication and used a nasal irrigation device as instructed.
However, I experienced some unusual symptoms after having a Valentine's Day dinner on August 20, 2015, where I primarily ate vegetarian food but also had four small pieces of cold cheesecake.
After returning home, I had intimate relations with my wife, and starting the next day, I began to experience headaches, eye pain, and discomfort in both eye sockets, particularly around the area just below the eyebrows, as well as pain in the back of my head.
Occasionally, I also have tooth pain in one specific tooth.
This pain has persisted from August 21 to today, August 22.
Could you please clarify whether this pain is related to the cold cheesecake I consumed, if it is due to engaging in "strenuous activity" during this recovery period, or if it is a normal post-operative phenomenon? Thank you for your assistance!

Dear Andy,
I recommend that you return to the original surgical hospital for an examination to check if there are still secretions or signs of inflammation in the sinuses, which could be causing the pain.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Post-sinus surgery discomfort can be quite common, and understanding the symptoms you are experiencing is crucial for your recovery. Based on your description, it seems that you are dealing with a combination of postoperative effects and possibly some lifestyle factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.
Firstly, after undergoing sinus surgery, it is not unusual to experience headaches, facial pain, and discomfort around the eyes. These symptoms can arise due to inflammation, swelling, or residual effects from the surgery itself. The nasal passages and sinuses are interconnected with various structures in the face, and any surgical intervention can lead to temporary changes in sensation and pain perception.
Regarding your specific symptoms of headache, eye pain, and discomfort in the back of your head, these could be attributed to several factors:
1. Postoperative Inflammation: After sinus surgery, it is common for the tissues to be inflamed as they heal. This inflammation can lead to pressure and pain in the sinus areas, which may manifest as headaches or facial pain.
2. Sinus Congestion: If there is any residual congestion or blockage in the sinuses, it can lead to increased pressure and pain. This is particularly true if you have not been able to clear your sinuses effectively post-surgery.
3. Dietary Factors: While it is unlikely that eating a small amount of cold cheesecake would directly cause significant pain, certain foods can sometimes exacerbate sinus issues. Dairy products, for example, can lead to increased mucus production in some individuals, which might contribute to feelings of congestion or discomfort.
4. Physical Activity: Engaging in physical activities, including intimate activities, shortly after surgery can sometimes lead to increased intracranial pressure or strain on the surgical site, potentially exacerbating pain. It is generally advisable to avoid strenuous activities for a period following surgery to allow for proper healing.
5. Nerve Sensitivity: After surgery, the nerves in the area may be more sensitive, leading to pain that can be perceived in various locations, including the teeth or the back of the head.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for a couple of days, it is essential to monitor them closely. Here are some recommendations:
- Follow-Up with Your Surgeon: Since you are experiencing ongoing pain, it would be prudent to schedule a follow-up appointment with your surgeon. They can assess your healing progress and determine if there are any complications, such as infection or significant inflammation.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may help alleviate your discomfort. However, consult with your doctor before taking any medication to ensure it is appropriate for your situation.
- Hydration and Humidity: Staying well-hydrated and using a humidifier can help keep your nasal passages moist, which may aid in recovery and reduce discomfort.
- Avoid Irritants: Try to avoid exposure to smoke, strong odors, or allergens that could irritate your sinuses and exacerbate your symptoms.
In summary, while some discomfort after sinus surgery is expected, persistent or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by your healthcare provider. They can provide tailored advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is on track.
