Postoperative headache after sinus surgery?

Hello, two weeks after sinus surgery (including sinus surgery, septoplasty, and inferior turbinate reduction), I have not experienced any blood clots, but I have started to have a large amount of yellow nasal discharge.
Is this a sign of inflammation? Additionally, I have been experiencing severe pain in my head and eyes (the doctor initially prescribed pain relief but did not prescribe antibiotics).
During a follow-up visit, I informed the doctor that the pain in my head and eyes was so severe that I could not stand.
After starting antibiotics, I felt a bit better.
Is it normal to have persistent headaches after surgery?

Hello, after undergoing sinus surgery (including sinus surgery, correction of a deviated septum, and inferior turbinate reduction) two weeks ago, you have not experienced any blood clots but have started to have a large amount of yellow nasal discharge, along with severe pain in your head and eyes.
This may indicate an infection.
It is advisable to return for a follow-up examination if symptoms persist.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Post-sinus surgery, particularly after procedures like sinus surgery, septoplasty, and inferior turbinate reduction, it is not uncommon for patients to experience a range of symptoms, including headaches and nasal discharge. Understanding these symptoms is crucial for recovery and managing expectations.

Firstly, the presence of yellow, thick nasal discharge can indicate inflammation or infection. After sinus surgery, the nasal passages are often swollen and healing, which can lead to increased mucus production. This discharge may be a sign of your body’s healing process, but if it is persistent and accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or a foul smell, it could suggest a secondary infection. In such cases, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider to assess whether additional treatment, such as antibiotics, is necessary.

Regarding the headaches and eye pain you are experiencing, these can be attributed to several factors post-surgery. After sinus surgery, it is common for patients to experience headaches due to swelling, pressure changes, and irritation of the surrounding tissues. The sinuses are closely connected to the eyes, and inflammation in the sinus cavities can lead to referred pain in the eye area. This discomfort can be exacerbated by the healing process, as the body adjusts to the changes in the nasal passages.

The fact that you mentioned the pain was severe enough to affect your ability to stand indicates that it may be more than just typical post-operative discomfort. While some degree of headache is expected, especially in the first few weeks following surgery, persistent and severe pain should be evaluated by your surgeon. It is important to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about the intensity and duration of your symptoms. If your doctor initially prescribed pain relief but did not provide antibiotics, it may be worth discussing whether an infection could be contributing to your symptoms.

In terms of management, if your doctor has prescribed antibiotics and you are beginning to feel better, that is a positive sign. However, if the headaches persist despite treatment, further investigation may be warranted. This could include imaging studies, such as a CT scan, to evaluate for any complications, such as fluid accumulation or residual infection.

In summary, while some headaches and nasal discharge are normal after sinus surgery, persistent and severe symptoms warrant further evaluation. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, report any worsening symptoms, and follow their recommendations for follow-up care. Your recovery is a process, and understanding the signs of normal healing versus complications can help you navigate this period more effectively.
