Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Hello, doctor.
I have undergone two MRI scans of my lumbar and cervical spine.
Can I get copies of the CDs? I would like to take them to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
Will their system be able to use them? Also, the lumbar scan was done six months ago.
I have been undergoing rehabilitation.
Is it still possible to get copies now, or should I get another scan at Chang Gung? Will the National Health Insurance Bureau impose a penalty for this?

Wei, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/11/06

Dr. Xie Cangtai reply Radiology

Mr.
Wei: Hello, your questions are briefly answered as follows: 1.
Your MRI scans of the lumbar and cervical regions can be copied onto a CD (which includes viewing software) and can be read on any hospital computer.
2.
The patient's MRI examination data is preserved and can be copied for the physician at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to review.
If a repeat scan is necessary, the hospital will take responsibility, and it will not be the patient's concern.
Wishing you good health, Dr.
Hsieh.

More Info

Yes, you can copy your MRI CDs for use at Chang Gung Hospital. MRI images are typically stored in a standard format known as DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine), which is widely used in the medical field. Most hospitals, including Chang Gung Hospital, have the capability to read DICOM files, so as long as your copied CDs contain the MRI images in this format, they should be accessible on their systems.

When it comes to copying your MRI CDs, ensure that the CDs include the necessary viewing software, as this will allow the medical staff at Chang Gung Hospital to view the images without any issues. It is advisable to check with the hospital beforehand to confirm that they can read the specific format of your CDs. Generally, hospitals are equipped to handle images from various sources, so this should not be a problem.

Regarding the timing of your MRI scans, if your last MRI of the lumbar region was done six months ago and you are currently undergoing rehabilitation, it is still valid to bring those images for review. Medical professionals often prefer to see the most recent imaging to assess any changes in your condition. If your symptoms have worsened or if there are concerns that were not addressed in the previous scans, the doctors at Chang Gung may recommend a new MRI.
As for the National Health Insurance (NHI) penalties, typically, patients are not penalized for seeking further imaging if it is deemed necessary by the healthcare provider. If the doctors at Chang Gung Hospital determine that a new MRI is required for a proper assessment of your condition, it should be covered under your insurance, provided you follow the necessary protocols. It’s always best to discuss these concerns directly with the hospital staff or your healthcare provider to ensure that you understand the policies and any potential costs involved.

In summary, you can copy your MRI CDs for use at Chang Gung Hospital, and they should be able to read them as long as they are in the correct format. If you have any doubts about the necessity of a new MRI, consult with the medical professionals at Chang Gung, as they will provide the best guidance based on your current health status and treatment needs. Always keep open communication with your healthcare providers regarding your imaging and treatment options to ensure you receive the best care possible.
