Request for ultrasound examination?

Hello, doctor.
If I want to request the ultrasound images taken at your hospital, do I need to return for a follow-up appointment to make the request? Also, can the images from your hospital be accessed at my local hospital as well? Thank you!

ukulele, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/12/28

Dr. Lin Wenbin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Ultrasound examinations are conducted for gynecological or obstetric patients.
For pregnant women undergoing prenatal check-ups, we have ultrasound CDs available for request.
However, for diagnostic gynecological ultrasounds, it is necessary to copy the medical records.
Unfortunately, photocopies are often not very clear, and there are subjective issues related to interpretation and angles.
Therefore, it is generally preferred not to copy ultrasound images, but rather to request a physician to issue a diagnostic report for clarity.

More Info

To request your ultrasound images from our hospital, the process may vary depending on the specific policies of the institution. Generally, if you need to obtain copies of your ultrasound images, it is advisable to contact the hospital's medical records department directly. In many cases, you may not need to return for a follow-up appointment just to request these images. However, some hospitals may require you to fill out a release form or provide identification to ensure the privacy and security of your medical records.

If you are seeking images from a previous ultrasound, it is often more efficient to call ahead and inquire about the specific procedure for obtaining these records. Some hospitals may allow you to request the images over the phone or through an online patient portal, while others may require you to visit in person. It is important to have relevant information on hand, such as your patient ID, the date of the ultrasound, and the type of ultrasound performed, to facilitate the process.

Regarding the second part of your question about whether ultrasound images from our hospital can be accessed at another facility, it largely depends on the policies of both hospitals. Typically, if the images are stored digitally, they may be accessible through a shared health information exchange system, allowing other healthcare providers to view your records. However, if the images are stored in a physical format or if the hospitals do not share a common system, you may need to obtain a copy of your images and bring them to the other facility yourself.

It is also worth noting that while you can request copies of your ultrasound images, many healthcare providers recommend obtaining a diagnostic report from your physician instead. This report often provides a clearer interpretation of the images and includes the physician's findings, which can be more beneficial for your ongoing care. The report will summarize the key details of the ultrasound, such as any abnormalities detected, and provide guidance on any necessary follow-up actions.

In summary, to request your ultrasound images, contact the medical records department of the hospital where you had the ultrasound performed. Check if you need to return for a follow-up appointment or if you can request the images remotely. For accessing images at another facility, inquire about the sharing policies between the two hospitals. Lastly, consider requesting a diagnostic report from your physician for a more comprehensive understanding of your ultrasound results. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider to ensure you receive the best possible care and information regarding your medical history.
