Constant peeling of the skin?
Doctor, I have been experiencing peeling of both my glans and foreskin.
I consulted a physician who suggested it might be a fungal infection and prescribed medication to apply.
However, only the areas covered by the foreskin and glans are peeling.
Sometimes it even hurts when it peels! I only use water when I shower, so why is this still happening? This started just a few weeks ago.

More Info
Persistent peeling of the glans and foreskin can be a concerning issue, and it’s good that you’ve already consulted a physician. The symptoms you describe, including peeling skin and pain, can be indicative of several conditions, with fungal infections being one of the more common causes. However, there are other potential causes that should also be considered.
Possible Causes
1. Fungal Infections: As your doctor suggested, a fungal infection, such as candidiasis (thrush), can lead to peeling skin on the glans and foreskin. This is often accompanied by itching, redness, and sometimes a discharge. Fungal infections thrive in warm, moist environments, which can occur under the foreskin.
2. Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections can also cause similar symptoms. Balanitis, an inflammation of the glans, can be caused by bacteria and may lead to peeling skin, redness, and discomfort.
3. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction to soaps, lotions, or other products, can cause irritation and peeling. This can occur if you’ve recently changed personal care products or if you have sensitive skin.
4. Psoriasis: This chronic skin condition can affect various parts of the body, including the genital area. It leads to red, scaly patches that can peel and may be itchy or painful.
5. Lichen Sclerosus: This is a chronic skin condition that can cause white patches, thinning of the skin, and peeling. It is more common in men and can lead to discomfort and pain.
6. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause symptoms that include peeling skin, irritation, and pain. It’s important to rule these out, especially if you have had new sexual partners.
Recommended Solutions
1. Follow-Up with Your Doctor: Since you’ve already seen a physician, it’s crucial to follow up if your symptoms persist or worsen. You may need a more specific treatment based on the exact diagnosis.
2. Topical Treatments: If a fungal infection is confirmed, antifungal creams or ointments may be prescribed. For dermatitis, topical corticosteroids might be recommended to reduce inflammation.
3. Hygiene Practices: Maintain good hygiene by gently washing the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that can irritate the skin. After washing, ensure the area is thoroughly dried, as moisture can exacerbate fungal infections.
4. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect contact dermatitis, try to identify and avoid any potential irritants, such as certain soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents.
5. Moisturizers: If the skin is dry and peeling, applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer may help soothe the area.
6. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until the cause of the peeling is determined and treated, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or potential transmission of infections.
7. Consider a Dermatologist: If your symptoms do not improve with initial treatments, consider seeing a dermatologist who specializes in skin conditions for a more thorough evaluation.
Conclusion
Persistent peeling of the glans and foreskin can stem from various causes, including infections and skin conditions. It’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. In the meantime, practicing good hygiene and avoiding irritants can help alleviate some discomfort. If you experience severe pain, swelling, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
