Headache and palpitations?
Hello doctor, I experienced dizziness last night, feeling somewhat like spinning, and I couldn't stand very steadily.
I took medication from the hospital and slept all day, which helped a bit, but my head still feels this way, especially for the past year and a half, with recurring episodes.
Additionally, I would like to ask about some pain in my left chest (which I believe is the heart area!).
Sometimes the medication doesn't alleviate it completely, although my heart rate has calmed down a bit.
I really want to know if this is related to autonomic nervous system dysfunction or if there are any mental health issues.
What is really going on with me? Thank you!

Dr. Ye Boshou reply Neurology
It seems like there may be autonomic nervous system dysregulation.
Emotional control is very important; relaxation and increased physical activity can help improve the condition.

More Info
Understanding headaches and palpitations can be complex, as they often involve multiple systems in the body, particularly the neurological and cardiovascular systems. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing recurrent headaches, dizziness, and palpitations, which can be distressing and may significantly impact your quality of life.
Headaches and Dizziness
The headaches you describe, particularly if they are accompanied by dizziness and a sensation of spinning, could be indicative of several conditions. One possibility is vestibular migraines, which can cause dizziness and headache symptoms. Unlike typical migraines, vestibular migraines may not always present with the classic unilateral headache but can lead to episodes of vertigo or imbalance.
Another consideration is tension-type headaches, which are often associated with stress, muscle tension, and poor posture, especially if you spend long hours at a computer. These headaches can lead to a feeling of tightness or pressure around the head and may be accompanied by neck and shoulder tension.
Palpitations and Chest Pain
Regarding the palpitations and chest discomfort, it is essential to differentiate between cardiac and non-cardiac causes. Palpitations can arise from anxiety, stress, or even excessive caffeine intake. However, they can also be a sign of an underlying cardiac issue, especially if they are associated with chest pain.
The discomfort in your left chest area, which you suspect is related to your heart, should be evaluated carefully. While many cases of chest pain are benign, it is crucial to rule out conditions such as angina or other cardiac issues. If the pain is persistent or worsening, or if you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea, it is vital to seek immediate medical attention.
Autonomic Nervous System and Mental Health
You mentioned concerns about autonomic nervous system dysregulation and potential mental health issues. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate and blood pressure. Dysregulation can lead to symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, and even gastrointestinal issues. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate these symptoms, creating a cycle that can be challenging to break.
If you suspect that anxiety or stress is contributing to your symptoms, consider discussing this with a healthcare provider. They may recommend strategies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, or relaxation techniques to help manage stress and anxiety.
Recommendations
1. Consult a Neurologist: Given your recurrent headaches and dizziness, a consultation with a neurologist is advisable. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include imaging studies (like an MRI) to rule out any structural issues in the brain.
2. Cardiac Evaluation: If you continue to experience palpitations and chest pain, consider seeing a cardiologist. They may perform tests such as an EKG or echocardiogram to assess your heart's health.
3. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your daily routine, such as regular exercise, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices. Reducing screen time and ensuring proper ergonomics while working can also help alleviate tension headaches.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any potential triggers. This information can be valuable for your healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing your condition.
5. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Ensure you are drinking enough water and eating a balanced diet, as dehydration and poor nutrition can contribute to headaches and dizziness.
In conclusion, your symptoms warrant a comprehensive evaluation to identify the underlying causes. By addressing both neurological and cardiovascular aspects, along with lifestyle factors, you can work towards finding relief and improving your overall well-being.
