Changes in Erection Angle: When to See a Urologist - Urology

Erection

In the past, my erection angle was roughly horizontal, but recently it seems to be lower, about 45 degrees relative to my thighs.
What could be the reason for this? I haven't experienced any injuries to my penis.
I've observed that my peers have erections that point upwards at angles greater than 90 degrees.
Why is my erection angle significantly lower than that of others my age? What factors could lead to a lower angle than before? Is this a matter of rigidity or erectile dysfunction? Since I haven't engaged in sexual intercourse, I'm unsure if there would be any issues, but I shouldn't have to wait until then to find out.
Should I see a doctor? I assume I should consult a urologist? What kind of evaluations might be conducted? Thanks.

T, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/02/06

Hello: The angle of erection is not important; as long as the hardness is sufficient for sexual intercourse, it doesn't matter much.
If you are still concerned about your physical condition, please visit our urology clinic for further examination and treatment.
Thank you!

Changes in the angle of erection can be concerning and may indicate underlying issues that warrant further investigation. It’s important to understand that the angle at which the penis rises during an erection can vary significantly among individuals. Factors such as anatomy, hormonal levels, psychological state, and overall health can all play a role in this variation.
In your case, you mentioned that your erection angle has changed from being relatively horizontal to approximately 45 degrees, which is lower than what you observe in your peers. This change can be attributed to several potential causes:
1. Anatomical Variations: Each individual has a unique anatomical structure, including the shape and size of the penis, the length of the suspensory ligament, and the elasticity of the penile tissues. These factors can influence the angle of erection.
2. Erectile Dysfunction (ED): A decrease in the angle of erection may be a sign of erectile dysfunction. ED can manifest in various ways, including difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, or changes in the quality of the erection. Although you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual activity recently, it is still possible to experience changes in erectile function.

3. Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, and other psychological factors can impact sexual performance and erectile function. If you are experiencing anxiety about your erection angle or sexual performance, this could contribute to changes in your erections.

4. Hormonal Changes: Testosterone levels can influence erectile function. If there are fluctuations in hormone levels, this could potentially affect the quality of your erections.

5. Vascular Health: The blood flow to the penis is crucial for achieving an erection. Conditions that affect vascular health, such as hypertension or diabetes, can lead to changes in erectile function and angle.

6. Peyronie's Disease: This condition involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can cause curvature and changes in the angle of erection. While you mentioned that there has been no injury, it is still worth considering this possibility if the angle continues to change.

Given your concerns, it would be advisable to consult a urologist. A urologist specializes in male reproductive health and can provide a thorough evaluation of your symptoms. During your visit, the doctor may conduct several assessments, including:
- Medical History: Discussing your medical history, including any medications you are taking, lifestyle factors, and any psychological stressors.

- Physical Examination: A physical examination to assess the anatomy of the penis and check for any abnormalities.

- Blood Tests: To evaluate hormone levels, including testosterone, and check for any underlying health issues such as diabetes or cardiovascular problems.

- Ultrasound: In some cases, a penile Doppler ultrasound may be performed to assess blood flow to the penis.

It’s important to address any concerns you have about your sexual health proactively. Early intervention can help identify any potential issues and provide appropriate treatment options. Remember, changes in erectile function are common and can often be addressed effectively with the right medical guidance. Don't hesitate to seek help; your sexual health is an important aspect of your overall well-being.
