Is It Normal to Experience Itching After Circumcision? - Urology

Share to:

It has been almost a month since I had my circumcision, but my glans is now very itchy. Is this normal?

I had a circumcision on January 25th, and now it's almost a month later.
The stitches have all dissolved, but I am experiencing itching around the glans, which is quite uncomfortable.
Could this be an infection, or what could it be? The appearance of my glans looks normal, and I don't experience itching when I take off my underwear to shower.
Why is this happening?

Hello, after surgery, there will be a long recovery period, generally ranging from 2 weeks to 2 months.
Initial wound healing typically completes in about 7 to 14 days.
However, full recovery may take over 6 to 8 weeks.
The issue of skin itching is often due to the healing process of the wound, which can be caused by the secretion of certain chemicals; this will resolve after some time.
It may also be due to some sutures under the skin causing irritation, and if that is the case, the recovery time may be prolonged.
It is recommended to minimize local irritation, including reducing the use of soaps and other cleansers, and avoiding washing the area with hot water.
Sincerely, Dr.

Experiencing itching after circumcision is not uncommon, and there are several potential reasons for this sensation. First, it’s important to understand that after circumcision, the skin around the glans (the head of the penis) undergoes a healing process. This area may become sensitive as it adjusts to being exposed, which can lead to itching.
Here are some common causes of itching following circumcision:
1. Healing Process: After circumcision, the skin is healing, and as it heals, it can become dry or irritated, leading to itching. This is a normal part of the healing process, especially as the stitches dissolve and the skin regenerates.

2. Dry Skin: The skin around the circumcision site may become dry, especially if you are not using any moisturizers. Dry skin can lead to itching and discomfort.

3. Irritation from Clothing: Sometimes, the fabric of underwear or pants can irritate the sensitive skin around the glans, causing itching. This is particularly true if the clothing is tight or made from rough materials.

4. Hygiene: It’s essential to maintain proper hygiene after circumcision. If the area is not cleaned properly, it can lead to irritation or even infection, which may cause itching. Make sure to wash the area gently with mild soap and water.

5. Infection: While your description suggests that the appearance of the glans is normal, it’s still possible to have a mild infection or inflammation that could cause itching. Signs of infection may include redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider.

6. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, an allergic reaction to soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents can cause itching. If you’ve recently changed any products that come into contact with the area, consider reverting to your previous products to see if that alleviates the itching.

7. Sensitivity: After circumcision, the glans may be more sensitive than before. This sensitivity can manifest as itching, especially when the area is exposed to air or friction from clothing.

Given that you mentioned the itching subsides when you are not wearing underwear or during bathing, it may indicate that the irritation is related to friction or moisture retention in your clothing.
Recommendations:
- Keep the Area Clean: Continue to maintain good hygiene by washing the area gently with mild soap and water.

- Moisturize: Consider using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to prevent dryness.

- Wear Loose Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting underwear and pants to reduce friction and irritation.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the itching. If it persists or worsens, or if you develop any other symptoms such as redness, swelling, or discharge, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while itching after circumcision can be a normal part of the healing process, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms and maintain proper hygiene. If you have any concerns or if the itching continues, seeking medical advice is always a good step to ensure there are no underlying issues.
