White spots on the foreskin?

Hello Doctor: I have a question.
There is a white patch on the right side of my foreskin that has been present for 2 to 3 months and is gradually getting larger.
Recently, it has been causing intermittent sharp pain.
Could you please tell me what this is? Is it a serious condition?

When it comes to the appearance of white patches on the foreskin, there are several potential causes that should be considered. The fact that you have noticed this white patch for 2 to 3 months and that it has been expanding, along with the presence of occasional sharp pain, is certainly concerning and warrants further investigation.

One possible cause of white patches on the foreskin is a condition known as lichen sclerosus. This is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can affect the genital area, leading to white, patchy areas of skin that may become itchy or painful. Lichen sclerosus can cause the skin to become thin and fragile, which might explain the sharp pain you are experiencing. It is more common in men who are uncircumcised, and while it is not contagious, it can lead to complications if left untreated.

Another potential cause could be a fungal infection, such as candidiasis (thrush), which can lead to white patches and discomfort. This is often accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or a discharge. Fungal infections can occur due to various factors, including poor hygiene, excessive moisture, or an imbalance in the body's natural flora.

Additionally, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as herpes or syphilis can also present with white patches or lesions on the genital area. These infections may be accompanied by other symptoms, such as sores, blisters, or systemic symptoms like fever or swollen lymph nodes.

It is also important to consider the possibility of a benign condition such as pearly penile papules, which are small, harmless bumps that can appear on the penis and are often mistaken for other conditions. However, these typically do not cause pain and are not associated with any serious health concerns.

Given the duration of your symptoms and the fact that the patch is expanding, it is crucial to seek medical attention from a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist or dermatologist. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend a biopsy or other diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of the white patch. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent potential complications and to address any underlying issues.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for the white patch on your foreskin, including lichen sclerosus, fungal infections, STIs, or benign conditions, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Do not delay seeking medical advice, as timely intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind regarding your health.
