Please relieve my worries?

Hello Doctor, I have a question I would like to ask, and I would appreciate your help in providing some information: Since January of this year, I have noticed that sometimes towards the end of urination, the latter part of the urine appears cloudy and has a milky white color.
I am unsure what the cause might be.

Xiao Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/03/07

Dr. Xu Wencang reply Urology

Generally, sediment in bladder residuals can improve simply by increasing water intake.
Additionally, urine tests can be conducted to check for the presence of proteinuria or bacterial infections.

Cloudy urine can be a concerning symptom, and it's important to understand its potential causes and when to seek medical help. The appearance of cloudy or milky urine can be attributed to several factors, some of which may be benign, while others could indicate an underlying health issue.

One of the most common causes of cloudy urine is the presence of excess proteins, which can occur in conditions such as proteinuria. This can be a sign of kidney issues, where the kidneys are not filtering waste properly. Infections, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs), can also lead to cloudy urine due to the presence of pus, bacteria, or blood. UTIs are often accompanied by other symptoms such as a burning sensation during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and sometimes fever.

Another possible cause of cloudy urine is the presence of crystals or stones in the urinary tract. These can form due to dehydration, dietary factors, or metabolic disorders. Conditions such as diabetes can also lead to changes in urine appearance, including cloudiness, due to the presence of glucose or ketones.

In some cases, dietary factors can contribute to cloudy urine. For instance, consuming certain foods, such as asparagus or beets, can alter the color and clarity of urine. Additionally, dehydration can lead to concentrated urine, which may appear darker and cloudier.

If you have noticed that your urine has been consistently cloudy since January, it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially if you experience any accompanying symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or changes in urinary habits. A healthcare provider can perform a urinalysis to determine the underlying cause of the cloudiness. This test can reveal the presence of proteins, glucose, ketones, bacteria, or blood, which can help guide diagnosis and treatment.

In summary, cloudy urine can result from a variety of factors, including infections, kidney issues, dietary influences, and dehydration. If this symptom persists or is accompanied by other concerning signs, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Early intervention can help address any underlying conditions and prevent potential complications.

Is that true? Could it be due to concentrated urine from not drinking water for too long? I suggest you go to the hospital immediately to see a nephrologist or urologist for an examination.

Hello: It is recommended to perform a urinalysis when there is turbidity, as it can provide better assessment. Generally, beverages in moderate amounts are unlikely to affect the appearance of urine; however, severe dehydration may have an impact. Wishing you good health.
