Antimicrobial resistance
Due to my allergic constitution, I easily catch colds whenever the weather is unstable.
My symptoms include sore throat, nasal congestion, headache, and sometimes acute pharyngitis.
My primary care physician prescribes Augmentin 1g for me.
I would like to know if taking it frequently could lead to antibiotic resistance, as medications prescribed at other clinics are ineffective, and I always need to take Augmentin 1g for improvement.

Dear Cherry Garden,
Typically, I do not prescribe antibiotics for acute pharyngitis unless it is acute tonsillitis or there are clear signs of suppuration.
Augmentin is an antibiotic that is usually prescribed for patients with pneumonia who are hospitalized or residing in nursing homes.
For general outpatient cases, I do not prescribe it; this is my practice.
As someone who also has allergies, I understand that a cold is the body's warning signal reminding us to rest more and not overexert ourselves.
A cold can make one feel drowsy, which serves this purpose.
From a patient's perspective, taking unnecessary medications is not beneficial.
You may have heard the saying that if you take medication for a cold, it will last a week, but if you don't take medication, it will last seven days.
A cold improves through one's own immune response; medications only serve to control symptoms.
Wishing you health in both body and mind, and may your family be well.
Best regards,
Hsu Li-An

Antibiotic resistance is a significant concern in modern medicine, particularly with the frequent use of antibiotics like Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate). Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is effective against various bacterial infections, including those caused by certain strains of Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. However, the overuse and misuse of antibiotics can lead to the development of resistant bacterial strains, which can complicate treatment and lead to more severe health issues.
In your case, where you have a history of allergies and frequent respiratory infections, it is understandable that you may rely on Augmentin for relief. However, it is essential to consider the implications of using this antibiotic regularly. Each time you take Augmentin, you may be contributing to the potential for antibiotic resistance. This occurs when bacteria adapt and become less susceptible to the effects of the antibiotic, making future infections harder to treat.
The symptoms you describe—sore throat, nasal congestion, headaches, and acute pharyngitis—are often viral in nature, especially if they occur frequently with changes in weather. Antibiotics like Augmentin are ineffective against viral infections, and their use in such cases is unnecessary. It is crucial to differentiate between bacterial and viral infections, as antibiotics should only be prescribed when there is clear evidence of a bacterial infection that requires treatment.
Moreover, the frequent use of Augmentin can lead to side effects, including gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. In some cases, prolonged use can disrupt the normal flora of the gut, leading to secondary infections like Clostridium difficile colitis, which can be severe and challenging to treat.
To mitigate the risk of antibiotic resistance, it is advisable to discuss alternative treatment options with your healthcare provider. They may recommend supportive care for viral infections, such as rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to alleviate symptoms. If bacterial infections are recurrent, your doctor might consider conducting further evaluations to identify underlying issues, such as allergies or chronic sinusitis, that could be contributing to your frequent infections.
In summary, while Augmentin can be effective for certain bacterial infections, its frequent use raises concerns about antibiotic resistance and potential side effects. It is essential to use antibiotics judiciously and to explore alternative treatment options for managing your symptoms. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen, and consider discussing the possibility of seeing a specialist if your symptoms persist or worsen. By taking these steps, you can help protect your health and reduce the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant infections in the future.
