Masturbation
I would like to ask, in the past when I woke up in the morning, I would sometimes experience an erection that was quite firm and would only subside after I urinated.
However, now my morning erections feel softer compared to before, and when I pull down my underwear to urinate, they disappear even before I actually urinate.
More often, I still have an erection while lying down, but it goes away as soon as I stand up.
Is this related to my previous habits of frequent masturbation, or is it just a normal change that occurs with age? I'm quite concerned.
Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
A-Kai: Hello, the ability to achieve an erection only indicates whether the neural pathways are intact and has no relation to sexual function.
In fact, morning erections are entirely due to a full bladder.
This is a spinal reflex.
It should not be related to masturbation.
Masturbation only affects sensitivity, making the glans more sensitive, which may require greater stimulation for future erections.

Morning erections, often referred to as "nocturnal penile tumescence," are a normal physiological phenomenon in men. They typically occur during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep and are a sign of healthy blood flow and nerve function in the penis. It is common for men to experience these erections multiple times throughout the night and upon waking in the morning. However, changes in the frequency or firmness of these erections can lead to concerns about sexual health and overall well-being.
In your case, you mentioned that your morning erections have become less firm and that they seem to dissipate more quickly than before. This can be concerning, especially if you have noticed a significant change from your previous experiences. There are several factors that could contribute to this change, and it is important to consider them in a holistic manner.
1. Age and Hormonal Changes: While you are still relatively young at 27, it is possible for testosterone levels to fluctuate. Testosterone is a key hormone in male sexual function, and its levels can be influenced by various factors, including stress, diet, and overall health. If you suspect that your testosterone levels may be lower than they should be, it might be worth discussing this with a healthcare provider who can recommend appropriate testing.
2. Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being can significantly impact sexual function. If you are experiencing increased stress or anxiety, this could manifest in physical changes, including the firmness of your erections. It’s important to address any underlying psychological issues, as they can have a profound effect on sexual health.
3. Physical Health: Conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues can affect blood flow and nerve function, leading to changes in erectile function. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can help mitigate these risks.
4. Frequency of Masturbation: While frequent masturbation is generally considered a normal behavior, it can sometimes lead to temporary changes in sexual function. If you find that you are engaging in masturbation excessively, it may be worth considering whether this is impacting your sexual health. However, it is unlikely to be the sole cause of changes in morning erections.
5. Sleep Quality: Sleep plays a crucial role in hormonal balance and overall health. Poor sleep quality can lead to fatigue and hormonal imbalances, which may affect sexual function. Ensuring that you have a consistent sleep schedule and good sleep hygiene can help improve your overall well-being.
If you are concerned about the changes you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, such as a urologist or an endocrinologist. They can provide a thorough evaluation, including hormone testing and assessments of your overall health, to determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.
In summary, while changes in morning erections can be concerning, they are not uncommon and can be influenced by a variety of factors. It is essential to take a comprehensive approach to your health, considering both physical and psychological aspects. Open communication with a healthcare provider can help you navigate these changes and ensure that you maintain optimal sexual health as you age.
