Morning erection
Hello, doctor.
In the past, I would wake up in the morning with a firm erection, but over the past month or two, the hardness of my morning erections has significantly decreased.
I sometimes don't even have an erection at all, which is a big difference from before.
My daily routine hasn't changed much during this time.
Could this be related to a decrease in testosterone levels? But I'm only 26 years old...
Could it also be related to my recent increased consumption of bean products and boiled eggs?
aki, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/07/05
Dr. Xu Wencang reply Urology
Hello, in response to your question: There is no significant correlation between the hardness of morning erections and diet.
However, it is recommended that you consult a physician for hormone testing.

More Info
Morning erections, also known as nocturnal penile tumescence, are a normal physiological phenomenon that occurs during sleep, particularly during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. These erections are a sign of healthy blood flow and nerve function in the penis. However, changes in the frequency or hardness of morning erections can be concerning, especially if they deviate from your typical experience.
In your case, you mentioned a noticeable decrease in the hardness of your morning erections over the past couple of months. This change can be attributed to several factors, and it’s important to consider both physical and psychological aspects.
1. Hormonal Changes: While testosterone levels can fluctuate, significant decreases in testosterone levels at the age of 26 are relatively uncommon. However, factors such as stress, sleep quality, and overall health can influence hormone levels. If you suspect hormonal changes, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider who can perform blood tests to assess your testosterone levels and other relevant hormones.
2. Dietary Influences: You mentioned an increase in your consumption of legumes and boiled eggs. While these foods are generally healthy and provide essential nutrients, they are not typically linked to a decrease in erectile function. However, a balanced diet is crucial for overall health, including sexual health. If your diet has changed significantly, it might be worth evaluating your overall nutritional intake to ensure you are getting adequate vitamins and minerals that support sexual health, such as zinc and vitamin D.
3. Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, and depression can significantly impact sexual function. If you have been experiencing increased stress or emotional challenges, this could contribute to changes in your erectile function. Psychological factors often play a significant role in sexual health, and addressing these through counseling or stress management techniques can be beneficial.
4. Lifestyle Factors: Sleep quality is crucial for maintaining healthy testosterone levels and overall sexual function. If your sleep has been disrupted or if you have been experiencing changes in your sleep patterns, this could affect your morning erections. Additionally, lifestyle factors such as exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption can also impact erectile function.
5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular issues, can affect blood flow and nerve function, leading to changes in erectile function. If you have any underlying health conditions or if you notice other symptoms, it’s essential to discuss these with a healthcare professional.
In conclusion, while occasional changes in morning erections can be normal, persistent changes warrant further investigation. It’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may recommend a physical examination, blood tests, or other diagnostic measures to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Addressing any potential hormonal, psychological, or lifestyle factors can help restore your sexual health and overall well-being. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider is key to finding the right solutions for your concerns.
