Long-term absence of morning erections?
Hello, doctor.
I am a 14-year-old second-year junior high school student from Kaohsiung.
I have not experienced much morning erection since early April (almost three months).
Recently, there have been rare occasions when I do have morning erections, but they are not very firm, and they go soft before I even go to the bathroom.
In April, I had an eye injury, and the ophthalmologist advised me to apply ointment and go to bed before 10 PM.
I used to sleep after 11 PM.
Could the lack of morning erections be related to the change in my sleeping schedule?
During puberty, I masturbate daily, but due to remote learning in Kaohsiung recently, my frequency has increased from once or twice a day to two or three times.
I also find myself going to bed later; I used to sleep around 11 PM, but now it’s around 1 or 2 AM.
I don’t feel like I’m sleeping well in the mornings.
Could the issues with morning erections be related to the frequency of masturbation and the quality and timing of my sleep?
Additionally, I haven’t been feeling very well emotionally these past few weeks, and I often feel quite unhappy in the evenings.
Could the issue with morning erections be related to my emotional state? I have researched a lot online, but the information varies, and I am quite worried about my physical condition.
I also don’t feel comfortable discussing this situation with my family.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Understanding the causes of reduced morning erections, or "morning wood," in teenagers can be complex, as it involves various physiological, psychological, and lifestyle factors. As a 14-year-old male, experiencing fluctuations in morning erections is quite common and can be influenced by several aspects of your life.
Firstly, it's important to note that morning erections are a normal part of male physiology, particularly during puberty. They are often a sign of healthy blood flow and hormonal activity. However, a decrease in the frequency or firmness of these erections can occur for various reasons.
1. Sleep Patterns: You mentioned that your sleep schedule has changed significantly, especially with the shift to remote learning. Sleep is crucial for hormonal balance, including testosterone levels, which play a vital role in sexual function. If you are now going to bed much later (around 1-2 AM) and waking up at different times, this could disrupt your body's natural circadian rhythms. Poor sleep quality can lead to fatigue and decreased libido, which may explain the reduction in morning erections. Aim for a consistent sleep schedule, ideally getting 8-10 hours of sleep per night, which is recommended for teenagers.
2. Frequency of Masturbation: You noted that your frequency of masturbation has increased. While masturbation is a normal and healthy activity, excessive frequency can sometimes lead to temporary changes in sexual function. However, it is unlikely to be the sole cause of reduced morning erections. It's essential to find a balance that feels right for you.
3. Emotional Well-being: You mentioned feeling down and not very happy lately. Emotional health can significantly impact sexual function. Stress, anxiety, and depression can all lead to reduced libido and changes in erectile function. If you are experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety, it might be helpful to talk to someone you trust, like a family member or a counselor, about how you're feeling.
4. Physical Health: While you have not reported any significant physical health issues, it's always good to consider overall health. Factors such as diet, exercise, and hydration can influence your body's functions, including sexual health. Regular physical activity and a balanced diet can improve mood and energy levels, which may positively impact your sexual health.
5. Hormonal Changes: During puberty, your body is undergoing significant hormonal changes. Fluctuations in testosterone levels are normal and can lead to variations in sexual function, including the frequency and firmness of erections.
In conclusion, while it is understandable to be concerned about changes in your body, many factors can contribute to the reduction of morning erections. It is often a combination of sleep patterns, emotional well-being, and lifestyle choices. If you continue to experience concerns or if these changes cause you significant distress, consider discussing them with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and support. Remember, it's essential to take care of both your physical and mental health during this time of growth and change.
