Morning erections have not occurred for a long time?

Hello, doctor.
I am 15 years old, and since the fifth grade, I have not experienced any morning erections up until now in the ninth grade.
When I was younger, I would always have morning erections when I woke up for school.
During the summer between sixth and seventh grade, I had a very irregular sleep schedule, but starting from the second year of junior high, I have been going to bed at 11 PM and waking up at 6:30 AM.
Now that I am in the ninth grade, I still have not experienced any morning erections.
I would like to know if this is related to my irregular sleep schedule in the first year of junior high.
Is it normal that I still have not had any morning erections even after returning to a regular sleep schedule? The absence of morning erections has been a concern for me for a long time, and I have searched online for reasons why they might disappear, but none of the explanations fit my situation.
I also want to know if not having morning erections for such a long time could have any effects.
Does this count as sexual dysfunction? Additionally, I have a condition of phimosis (the glans cannot be exposed when the penis is erect, but I can pull it down with my hand).
I would like to know if this could affect the growth of my penis, as it seems like my penis has not developed at all.
I hope you can clarify these concerns that have troubled me for many years, and I would also like to know if there are any methods to encourage morning erections.

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology

Hello, Xiao Chen: The absence of morning erections does not necessarily mean that you do not have nocturnal erections.
If you are concerned, you may consider undergoing an erectile function test.
Additionally, excessive anxiety and focusing on this issue can make it more difficult to achieve morning erections, but this is not related to erectile dysfunction.
Phimosis, in theory, should not affect the growth and development of the penis; however, if you feel that your penis is not developing properly, it is advisable to consult a doctor at a hospital for reassurance.

Understanding the absence of morning erections, or "morning wood," in teenagers can be a source of concern for many young men, especially when it seems to deviate from what is considered typical. Morning erections are a normal physiological response that occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, and they can be influenced by various factors, including hormonal changes, sleep patterns, and overall health.

In your case, it appears that you experienced a normal pattern of morning erections during your earlier years, but this has changed since entering junior high school. There are several potential explanations for this shift. One significant factor could be your sleep schedule. You mentioned that you had irregular sleep patterns during the summer before entering junior high, which may have disrupted your body's natural rhythms. Sleep plays a crucial role in hormone regulation, including testosterone, which is essential for sexual function and the occurrence of erections. A consistent sleep schedule, as you have now adopted, is beneficial, but if your body has not yet adjusted to this change, it might take some time for normal physiological responses to return.

Additionally, psychological factors can also play a role. Stress, anxiety, and concerns about sexual performance can all impact erectile function. If you have been preoccupied with the absence of morning erections, this anxiety could further inhibit your body's natural responses. It's important to remember that fluctuations in sexual function are common during adolescence, and many young men experience variations in their sexual health as they grow and develop.

Regarding your concern about whether the absence of morning erections indicates a sexual dysfunction, it is essential to understand that this is not necessarily the case. Sexual function encompasses a range of factors, including libido, the ability to achieve and maintain an erection, and overall sexual health. If you are otherwise healthy and do not experience difficulties with erections during sexual arousal, the absence of morning erections alone may not be a cause for alarm.

As for your concern about phimosis, or the inability to retract the foreskin, this condition can affect hygiene and may lead to complications if not addressed. However, it is unlikely to impact the growth of the penis itself. If you are experiencing discomfort or difficulty with hygiene due to phimosis, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance on whether treatment is necessary, which may include options such as topical steroids or, in some cases, surgical intervention.

To encourage the return of morning erections, consider the following tips:
1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate hydration can positively impact overall health and hormone levels.

2. Manage Stress: Engage in relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga to help reduce anxiety and stress.

3. Sleep Hygiene: Continue to prioritize a regular sleep schedule, aiming for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

4. Open Communication: If you feel comfortable, discuss your concerns with a trusted adult or healthcare provider who can offer support and guidance.

5. Avoid Substances: Limit the use of alcohol and recreational drugs, as these can negatively affect sexual function.

If your concerns persist or if you experience other symptoms, it would be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, including hormone level assessments, to determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed. Remember, adolescence is a time of significant change, and many young men experience variations in their sexual health. It's essential to be patient with your body as it continues to develop.
