Does masturbation affect the kidneys?
Dear Dr.
Hsu,
I would like to ask you about an issue I have been experiencing.
Last June, I fell while running, and the next day I felt pain in my right lower back.
I consulted an orthopedic doctor who took X-rays, and the results showed no bone injury.
In December, I visited a rehabilitation specialist who diagnosed me with a right gluteal muscle strain and recommended physical therapy.
However, I only attended four sessions.
Since last year, I have been engaging in masturbation almost daily.
Could this be contributing to a worsening of my injury? Additionally, I have recently started to feel some pain in my left lower back.
Could my frequent masturbation be causing kidney inflammation? I am considering getting my kidneys checked.
Should I see a urologist or a nephrologist for this?
Furthermore, how should I explain my condition to the doctor? Thank you for your careful consideration and your response.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, according to Western medicine, kidney function should not affect sexual function unless it has progressed to the point of requiring dialysis.
It is generally believed that the concept of "kidney" in Traditional Chinese Medicine differs somewhat from that in Western medicine.
Frequent masturbation does not cause kidney inflammation.
This is a response from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology at Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Masturbation is a normal and common activity that many people engage in, and it is generally considered to be a healthy part of human sexuality. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that masturbation has any direct negative effects on kidney health. The concerns you have regarding your kidney health and the pain you are experiencing may be related to other factors, such as your recent injury and muscle strain.
In your case, the pain you are experiencing in your right side, which was diagnosed as a muscle strain, is likely unrelated to masturbation. Muscle strains can cause discomfort and pain, especially if you are engaging in activities that put stress on the affected area. If you have recently started experiencing pain on the left side as well, it may be worth considering whether this is also related to muscle strain or if it could be due to other factors, such as posture or physical activity.
If you are concerned about your kidney health, it is important to consult a healthcare professional. You can choose to see either a urologist or a nephrologist, depending on your specific concerns. A urologist specializes in the urinary tract and male reproductive system, while a nephrologist focuses on kidney health. Given your symptoms and concerns about potential kidney issues, a nephrologist may be the more appropriate choice.
When you visit the doctor, it is important to clearly communicate your symptoms and concerns. You might say something like, "I have been experiencing pain in my right side, which was diagnosed as a muscle strain, but I have also started feeling pain on my left side. I am concerned about my kidney health and would like to know if I should undergo any tests to assess my kidney function." This will help the physician understand your situation and determine the appropriate tests or evaluations needed.
In terms of kidney health, there are several key indicators that doctors typically assess, including blood tests for creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), as well as urine tests to check for protein or blood in the urine. These tests can help determine if there is any underlying kidney dysfunction.
It is also important to consider lifestyle factors that can affect kidney health. Staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet, and avoiding excessive use of substances that can harm the kidneys (such as certain medications or excessive alcohol) are all important for overall kidney health. Additionally, if you have any pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, managing those conditions effectively is crucial for protecting your kidneys.
In summary, masturbation is not likely to be a cause of kidney issues or muscle pain. Your current symptoms may be more related to your previous injury and muscle strain. If you have concerns about your kidney health, consult a nephrologist and be prepared to discuss your symptoms and any relevant medical history. Regular check-ups and monitoring are key to maintaining kidney health, especially if you have risk factors that could affect kidney function.
