My eyes water whenever they come into contact with water?
My eyes tend to water whenever they come into contact with water.
What could be the reason for this? After showering, it almost happens 10 times, and around 7 times it waters.
Sometimes it even waters when I'm sleeping.
Doctor, I would like to know the reason.
Thank you!

Experiencing watery eyes when they come into contact with water can be quite bothersome, and there are several potential reasons for this phenomenon. The primary cause is often related to the eye's natural response to irritation or stimulation. When water, especially if it contains soap, shampoo, or other chemicals, comes into contact with the eyes, it can trigger a reflex response that leads to excessive tearing. This is a protective mechanism designed to wash away irritants and maintain the health of the eye.
One common reason for watery eyes upon contact with water is the presence of an underlying sensitivity or allergic reaction. Individuals with allergic conjunctivitis may find that their eyes water excessively when exposed to certain substances, including those found in tap water, such as chlorine or other chemicals. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a contributing factor.
Another possibility is that you may have a condition known as "dry eye syndrome." This condition occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. In response to irritation from water, your eyes may overcompensate by producing more tears, leading to the sensation of watery eyes. This can be particularly noticeable after activities like showering or swimming, where water exposure is significant.
Moreover, if you have had previous eye surgeries or conditions, such as a history of retinal detachment or cataract surgery, your eyes may be more sensitive to environmental changes. Post-surgical changes can alter the tear film stability, making your eyes more reactive to water exposure.
It's also worth considering the possibility of blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelids that can cause irritation and excessive tearing. This condition can be exacerbated by exposure to water, especially if there is any residual soap or shampoo on the eyelids.
If you find that your eyes water excessively after contact with water, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional. They can perform a thorough examination to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. In some cases, they may recommend artificial tears or other treatments to help manage your symptoms effectively.
In summary, watery eyes upon contact with water can be attributed to several factors, including irritation from chemicals, allergic reactions, dry eye syndrome, or previous eye conditions. If this issue persists or worsens, seeking professional medical advice is essential to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Remember to avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can exacerbate irritation and lead to further complications.
