Pain around the navel?

It seems that there is a lump inside or around my navel that hurts when pressed.
What could be the cause of this condition? If I need to get it checked, which department should I visit?

Hello: Regarding your questions, here are the explanations: 1.
Folliculitis: Inflammation caused by blockage of the follicle opening, which may present as small, painful bumps upon touch, but is not severe.
2.
Acne: Inflammation caused by blockage of the sebaceous glands, with similar symptoms as above, but the bumps are usually larger.
3.
Lipoma: A hard lump formed from subcutaneous fat, typically soft and painless; if it is painful, it indicates inflammation.
4.
Foreign body: Small objects, such as sand, can also become lodged in the navel and cause inflammation.
It is recommended that you consult a dermatologist to address your concerns.
Thank you for your message.

More Info

Umbilical pain, particularly when accompanied by a noticeable lump or tenderness around the navel area, can be concerning and may arise from various underlying conditions. Understanding the potential causes of this pain is crucial for determining the appropriate course of action and when to seek medical help.

Possible Causes of Umbilical Pain
1. Umbilical Hernia: This occurs when a portion of the intestine or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the umbilicus (navel). It can cause pain, especially when pressure is applied, such as during physical activity or when lifting heavy objects.

2. Infection: An infection in the area around the navel can lead to localized pain and swelling. This could be due to a skin infection or, in rare cases, an infection of the internal structures.

3. Appendicitis: Although the appendix is located in the lower right abdomen, pain from appendicitis can sometimes be felt around the umbilical area initially before migrating to the right side. This is often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and fever.

4. Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as constipation, bowel obstruction, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can cause referred pain to the umbilical region.
5. Cysts or Tumors: In some cases, a lump near the umbilicus could be a cyst or, although less common, a benign or malignant tumor.

6. Referred Pain: Pain from other areas, such as the kidneys or the reproductive organs, can sometimes be felt around the umbilicus due to the way nerves are distributed in the body.

When to Seek Medical Help
You should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent or worsening pain
- Fever or chills
- Nausea or vomiting
- Changes in bowel habits (such as severe constipation or diarrhea)
- A noticeable lump that is growing or changing
- Any signs of infection, such as redness, warmth, or discharge from the area

Which Specialist to Consult
For umbilical pain, the most appropriate specialist to consult would be a gastroenterologist, who specializes in digestive system disorders. If a hernia is suspected, a general surgeon may also be involved in the diagnosis and treatment. In cases where an infection is suspected, a primary care physician or an infectious disease specialist may be consulted initially.

Diagnostic Approach
Upon visiting a healthcare provider, they may perform a physical examination and ask about your symptoms, medical history, and any recent activities that could have contributed to the pain. Depending on the findings, they may recommend imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan to get a clearer picture of what is happening internally.

Conclusion
In summary, umbilical pain accompanied by a lump can arise from various causes, ranging from benign conditions like hernias to more serious issues such as infections or gastrointestinal disorders. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical attention if the pain persists or worsens. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and ensure better health outcomes.
