Red Spots and Peeling on the Glans: Causes and Concerns - Urology

Help me with my brain issues?

Recently, after sexual intercourse, I noticed red spots on the glans and some peeling, accompanied by a slight stinging sensation.
I've experienced this before, but it usually resolved on its own after about a week.
However, it seems to occur every time I have unprotected sex.
Could this be just a simple bacterial infection, or is there something else going on?

A-King, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/06/18

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, it seems like you might have a fungal infection, such as candidiasis.
Could you ask the female partner if she has increased vaginal discharge or thick yellow secretions? It is best for both partners to undergo treatment together for a quicker resolution.

Red spots and peeling on the glans, accompanied by a stinging sensation, can be concerning and may indicate several potential issues. Given your description, it is important to consider a few common causes and their implications.

1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: One of the most common reasons for red spots and peeling on the glans is irritation or an allergic reaction. This can occur due to various factors, including the use of certain soaps, lotions, or lubricants that may not be compatible with sensitive skin. Additionally, friction during sexual activity, especially if lubrication is insufficient, can lead to irritation.

2. Bacterial or Fungal Infections: The symptoms you describe could also suggest a bacterial or fungal infection. Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) can be caused by infections, often presenting with redness, swelling, and peeling. Fungal infections, particularly candidiasis (yeast infection), can also cause similar symptoms, especially if there is a history of recurrent issues after unprotected sexual intercourse.

3. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): It is crucial to consider the possibility of sexually transmitted infections, such as herpes or syphilis, which can present with red spots or lesions on the genital area. If you have had unprotected sexual encounters, it is advisable to get tested for STIs, as early detection and treatment are essential for your health and the health of your partners.

4. Dermatological Conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema, can also affect the genital area, leading to red spots and peeling skin. These conditions may require specific treatments and management strategies.

5. Recurrent Issues: Since you mentioned that this has occurred before and resolves on its own after about a week, it may indicate a recurring issue that could be linked to your sexual practices or hygiene. However, the recurrence of symptoms after unprotected sex suggests that there may be an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the recurring nature of your symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider or a urologist. They can perform a physical examination, take a detailed history, and possibly conduct tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.

- Avoid Irritants: In the meantime, consider avoiding any potential irritants, such as scented soaps or lotions, and ensure proper hygiene. Using a gentle, unscented soap and avoiding tight-fitting clothing can help reduce irritation.

- Practice Safe Sex: To minimize the risk of infections, consider using condoms consistently, especially if you have multiple partners or are unsure of your partner's sexual health status.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as discharge, fever, or increased pain, and report these to your healthcare provider, as they can provide valuable information for diagnosis.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be due to a benign cause, the potential for infections or other underlying conditions necessitates a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure your overall sexual health.
