Red spots on the glans?
Hello Doctor, I have noticed two red spots on the glans.
They are not painful or itchy, and the surface is smooth.
Occasionally, there is some peeling over time.
Initially, I thought it would heal on its own, but after some time, there has been no improvement.
I would like to know if this is a sign of inflammation and what would be the best way to address it.
Thank you!

Hello: If there is erythema, further examination may be necessary for safety.
If it is simply inflammation, it should not last too long.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
When it comes to red spots on the glans (the head of the penis), there are several potential causes, and understanding these can help in determining the appropriate treatment options. The fact that the spots are not painful or itchy and that they appear smooth is an important detail, as it may indicate a less severe condition. However, it is still essential to consider various possibilities.
1. Common Causes: Red spots on the glans can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Irritation or Allergic Reaction: This could be due to soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the area. If you have recently changed any personal care products, this could be a contributing factor.
- Infections: While you mentioned that there is no pain or itching, certain infections, such as yeast infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can present with red spots. However, these typically have additional symptoms.
- Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, harmless bumps that can appear on the glans and are often mistaken for something more serious. They are a normal anatomical variant and do not require treatment.
- Lichen Planus or Other Dermatitis: These skin conditions can cause red spots or patches and may lead to peeling or flaking skin.
2. Inflammation: The presence of red spots could indicate some form of inflammation, but without additional symptoms (such as pain, itching, or discharge), it may not be a cause for alarm. Inflammation can occur due to minor injuries, friction, or irritation.
3. Treatment Options:
- Observation: If the spots are not causing any discomfort and have not changed significantly, monitoring them for a short period may be appropriate. Sometimes, minor irritations resolve on their own.
- Topical Treatments: If irritation is suspected, applying a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer may help soothe the area. Avoiding harsh soaps or products is also advisable.
- Avoiding Irritants: If you suspect that a product may be causing the irritation, discontinue its use and see if the condition improves.
- Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: If the spots persist, change in appearance, or if you develop any new symptoms (such as pain, itching, or discharge), it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. A dermatologist or urologist can perform a thorough examination and may conduct tests to rule out infections or other conditions.
4. When to Seek Immediate Care: If you experience any sudden changes, such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or discharge, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires treatment.
In summary, while red spots on the glans can be concerning, many causes are benign and treatable. Observing the spots for changes, avoiding potential irritants, and consulting with a healthcare provider if necessary are prudent steps to take. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your health.
