Numbness
Due to recent tooth decay and pain from the wisdom tooth in the lower right jaw, I have been seeking treatment at the clinic for nearly a month, with the pain mostly occurring at night.
The dentist informed me that the dental nerve in this area has been removed, so the pain is caused by the bone.
However, I have recently noticed a tingling sensation in the lower right lip when touched, and discomfort is starting to occur near the affected tooth.
Could you please explain why these symptoms are happening and how to resolve them?

Pain in the lower right wisdom tooth is generally caused by dental caries leading to pulpitis or misalignment of the wisdom tooth, making it difficult to maintain proper oral hygiene, which can result in pericoronitis.
If the nerve of the wisdom tooth has been removed (i.e., root canal treatment has been performed), the pain may be due to pericoronitis.
Additionally, if there is a tingling sensation in the lower right lip upon touch and discomfort in nearby teeth (possibly premolars or incisors), this may indicate irritation of the inferior alveolar nerve or the incisor nerve (a branch of the inferior alveolar nerve), potentially due to inflammatory lesions at the root apex of adjacent teeth.
It is advisable to seek an examination and appropriate treatment from a dentist.

After undergoing wisdom tooth treatment, experiencing numbness and discomfort in the lower jaw area, particularly around the site of the extraction, can be concerning. This phenomenon is not uncommon and can be attributed to several factors related to the procedure and the anatomy of the area.
Firstly, during the extraction of a wisdom tooth, especially if it is impacted or has deep roots, the surrounding tissues, including nerves, can be affected. The inferior alveolar nerve, which runs through the lower jaw, is particularly susceptible to trauma during dental procedures. If this nerve is irritated or damaged during the extraction, it can lead to sensations of numbness, tingling, or discomfort in the lower lip and chin area. This is often referred to as "paresthesia."
The numbness you are experiencing in your lower lip could be a result of temporary nerve irritation or damage. In many cases, this numbness is temporary and can resolve on its own as the nerve heals. However, the duration of recovery can vary from person to person. Some may experience improvement within a few days to weeks, while others may take longer.
Additionally, the discomfort you feel when touching the area near the extracted tooth could be due to inflammation or sensitivity in the surrounding tissues. After a tooth extraction, the body initiates a healing process, which can include swelling and tenderness in the area. This inflammation can contribute to discomfort and may also affect nearby nerves, leading to abnormal sensations.
To address your symptoms, here are some recommendations:
1. Follow-Up with Your Dentist: It is crucial to keep your dentist informed about your symptoms. They can assess the area for any signs of complications, such as infection or dry socket, which could exacerbate discomfort.
2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help manage discomfort. If your pain is severe, your dentist may prescribe stronger pain medication.
3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the outside of your jaw can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing temporary relief from discomfort.
4. Avoid Irritation: Try to avoid touching or irritating the area around the extraction site. This includes avoiding hard or crunchy foods that may cause discomfort during chewing.
5. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent infection. Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water after meals to keep the area clean.
6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If the numbness persists beyond a few weeks or worsens, it is essential to return to your dentist for further evaluation.
7. Consider Neurological Evaluation: If numbness continues or if you experience additional symptoms, such as weakness or changes in sensation, a referral to a neurologist may be warranted to assess for any underlying nerve issues.
In summary, while numbness and discomfort following wisdom tooth extraction can be alarming, they are often part of the healing process. With appropriate care and monitoring, many patients find that their symptoms improve over time. However, staying in close communication with your dental care provider is key to ensuring a smooth recovery and addressing any complications that may arise.
