Why Are Dermatology Answers So Repetitive and Generic? - Dermatology

Why are your answers all the same?

I have read several questions similar to my own situation and I am puzzled as to why your answers are all uniform (directly copied) and not tailored to the specific questions.
If that's the case, why bother responding at all? It might be better to have other physicians address these concerns instead.

Hello Amin,
First of all, I would like to thank you for your support of "Taiwan e-Hospital." Secondly, regarding your question, "I have seen several inquiries similar to my own situation and I am puzzled as to why your answers are all uniform (directly copied) and not tailored to the questions," I would like to explain as follows:
1.
Skin diseases are unique in nature, and aside from direct diagnosis through visual examination, physical examination by touch is often necessary, and sometimes a skin biopsy for pathological diagnosis is required.
Therefore, it is indeed challenging to convey a complete understanding solely through written descriptions.
This issue can arise whether it is the questioner writing to the physician or the physician responding to the questioner.
2.
The purpose of inquiries on "Taiwan e-Hospital" is to provide a communication channel for the public and physicians to offer "reference" information, but it is not intended to replace traditional consultations.
Moreover, the reference materials provided by "Taiwan e-Hospital" are required to be accurate, unlike other online information sources.
3.
Based on government regulations, physicians are not allowed to diagnose, treat, or prescribe medication without personally examining the patient.
Additionally, advertising or endorsement activities are prohibited.
Given these points, I always include in my responses, "I recommend that when you notice the described symptoms on your skin, you should promptly visit a public hospital in your city or county and consult with a dermatologist.
All the physicians here are very willing to assist you," in hopes that the public can receive the most accurate and appropriate treatment.
Amin, this is my explanation, and I hope it clarifies your confusion.
If my response did not meet your satisfaction, I apologize.
Lastly, thank you once again for your support of "Taiwan e-Hospital." "Taiwan e-Hospital" cares about your health.

The observation that dermatology answers can often seem repetitive and generic is a common concern among patients seeking personalized medical advice. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors inherent in the practice of dermatology and the nature of medical consultations.

Firstly, dermatological conditions often share similar symptoms and underlying mechanisms. For instance, conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis can present with redness, scaling, and itching. Because of this overlap, dermatologists may find themselves providing similar advice for different patients experiencing comparable symptoms. This is particularly true when the information is being conveyed in a written format, where the nuances of individual cases can be lost.

Secondly, the limitations of remote consultations or written responses can hinder the ability of dermatologists to provide tailored advice. Dermatology is a field that often relies on visual examination and physical assessment. Without the opportunity for a direct consultation, it becomes challenging for physicians to offer personalized recommendations. The lack of a physical examination means that dermatologists must rely on the information provided by the patient, which may not capture the full complexity of their condition.

Moreover, medical guidelines and best practices often dictate a standard approach to common dermatological issues. Physicians are trained to follow evidence-based protocols, which can lead to similar recommendations across different cases. This is particularly important in dermatology, where misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatments and worsening of the condition.

Additionally, the nature of online medical advice platforms often encourages brevity and clarity. In an effort to provide quick and accessible information, responses may be condensed into generalized statements that cover the most common scenarios. While this approach can be beneficial for providing immediate guidance, it may not address the unique circumstances of each patient.

Furthermore, the ethical and legal considerations in medicine necessitate caution in providing specific medical advice without a thorough examination. Physicians are bound by regulations that prevent them from diagnosing or prescribing treatments without a proper assessment. This can lead to a more cautious approach in written responses, resulting in answers that may seem generic.

To address the concerns of patients who feel their questions are not being adequately answered, it is essential for healthcare providers to encourage follow-up consultations. Patients should be reminded that while online platforms can provide valuable information, they cannot replace the personalized care that comes from an in-person visit. Dermatologists can also strive to include more context in their responses, emphasizing the importance of individual assessment and the potential for variations in treatment based on specific patient needs.

In conclusion, while it may be frustrating for patients to receive repetitive and generic answers in dermatology, this is often a reflection of the complexities of dermatological conditions, the limitations of remote consultations, and the adherence to standardized medical practices. For personalized care, patients are encouraged to seek direct consultations with dermatologists who can provide tailored advice based on a comprehensive evaluation of their condition.
