Penile curvature issues?

Hello, doctor.
When I have an erection, my entire penis cannot become straight and bends downward.
I have not undergone circumcision yet.
I would like to know if this is caused by that, or if there are other factors involved?

Jian Cheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/07/17

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology

Hello: Penile curvature is not related to the foreskin.
The causes may include congenital factors, trauma, or infection.
It is recommended that you visit a urology clinic for further examination.
Thank you!

Understanding penile curvature, particularly when it occurs during an erection, can be a source of concern for many men. The condition you are describing, where the penis bends or curves during an erection, can be attributed to several factors, and it is essential to understand these to determine the appropriate course of action.

One common cause of penile curvature is a condition known as Peyronie's disease. This condition is characterized by the formation of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can lead to a curvature during erections. The exact cause of Peyronie's disease is not fully understood, but it is often associated with trauma or injury to the penis, which may occur during sexual activity or vigorous physical activity. In some cases, the curvature may develop gradually without any known injury.

Another potential factor contributing to penile curvature could be related to anatomical variations or congenital conditions. Some men may naturally have a slight curvature of the penis that does not cause any issues, while others may experience more pronounced curvature that can lead to discomfort or difficulties during sexual intercourse.

Regarding your mention of not having undergone circumcision, it is unlikely that this alone is the cause of the curvature. However, if there are issues related to the foreskin, such as phimosis (a condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted), it could potentially contribute to discomfort during erections. In such cases, addressing the foreskin issue may help alleviate some symptoms, but it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation.

If the curvature is causing pain, discomfort, or difficulties with sexual function, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A urologist can perform a thorough examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the structure of the penis and identify any underlying issues. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the curvature and the symptoms experienced. In some cases, medications or injections may be used to help reduce the curvature, while more severe cases may require surgical intervention.

In summary, penile curvature during an erection can result from various factors, including Peyronie's disease, anatomical variations, or issues related to the foreskin. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and explore appropriate treatment options. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and improved sexual health. If you have concerns about your condition, do not hesitate to reach out to a urologist for personalized advice and care.
