Doctor, I'm about to start school, please help me!
I am not sure if I have panic disorder, but whenever I think about feeling anxious or lonely without anyone by my side, I start to feel nervous.
My hands and feet tingle, my heart races, and I feel like I might faint.
Additionally, I often feel like there is something stuck in my throat, I experience stomach pain, and I have difficulty breathing.
Is this panic disorder or autonomic nervous system dysfunction? Also, could you recommend any well-known doctors in Kaohsiung? (I would be very grateful.)

Based on your symptoms, if there are no significant issues found during the physical examination, it is quite possible that you are experiencing panic symptoms.
However, to determine whether it is indeed panic disorder, further evaluation at an outpatient clinic is necessary.
In Kaohsiung, both Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital are good options.
It is recommended to consult with a physician who specializes in psychoneurosis.

It sounds like you are experiencing significant anxiety and panic symptoms, which can be quite distressing. From your description, it appears that you may be dealing with panic disorder or a related anxiety condition. Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent and unexpected panic attacks, which are sudden surges of intense fear or discomfort that peak within minutes. Symptoms can include a racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, feelings of unreality, and a fear of losing control or dying.
The physical sensations you describe—such as your hands and feet feeling numb, rapid heartbeat, a sensation of choking, stomach pain, and difficulty breathing—are common symptoms of panic attacks. These symptoms can often lead to a cycle of fear, where the anticipation of another panic attack can trigger further anxiety, creating a vicious cycle that can be hard to break.
It's also important to consider the possibility of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or social anxiety disorder, especially since you mentioned feelings of loneliness and fear of being alone. GAD involves excessive worry about various aspects of life, while social anxiety disorder is characterized by intense fear of social situations and being judged by others.
In terms of treatment, anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, are highly treatable. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective forms of therapy for anxiety. It helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their anxiety. Additionally, exposure therapy, a component of CBT, can help you gradually face the situations that trigger your anxiety in a safe and controlled manner.
Medication can also be an effective treatment option. Antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders. However, medication should always be discussed with a healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your specific situation.
Regarding your question about finding a reputable doctor in Kaohsiung, I recommend looking for a psychiatrist or psychologist who specializes in anxiety disorders. You can start by checking local hospitals or mental health clinics, as they often have specialists on staff. Additionally, online platforms may provide reviews and ratings for mental health professionals in your area, which can help you make an informed decision.
It's understandable to feel apprehensive about seeking help, but remember that you are not alone in this. Many people experience anxiety and panic symptoms, and reaching out for support is a courageous step towards feeling better. You deserve to find relief from these distressing feelings and to live a fulfilling life. Don't hesitate to talk to a trusted family member or friend about your feelings, as they can provide support and encouragement as you seek professional help.
In summary, your symptoms suggest that you may be experiencing panic disorder or another anxiety-related condition. Seeking help from a mental health professional is crucial, as they can provide a proper diagnosis and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Remember, there is no shame in seeking help, and doing so can lead you to a path of healing and recovery.
