Penile curvature surgery?
Hello, I recently underwent surgery for penile curvature, where two stitches were placed in the penile area.
It has been almost two months, and the discomfort is nearly gone.
My question is regarding the area where the wound is healing; the foreskin is fixed and does not move.
Normally, the foreskin can retract or be pulled forward, but it is fixed in place.
Should I wait longer for the tissue underneath to heal completely before the foreskin can move again?

Dr. Lin Wenxu reply Urology
The repair of tissue at the surgical site and the local inflammatory response typically require about three months for tissue reconstruction to achieve complete recovery without local tissue adhesions.
Therefore, it may take some additional time for full recovery.

After undergoing penile curvature surgery, it is essential to understand the recovery process and what to expect in terms of healing and functionality. Given that you are approaching the two-month mark post-surgery, it is a good time to assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.
1. Wound Healing: Generally, surgical wounds in the genital area can take several weeks to heal. The fact that your discomfort is decreasing is a positive sign. Typically, the outer layer of the skin heals faster than the deeper tissues, which may take longer to fully recover. It is crucial to monitor the area for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge.
2. Skin and Tissue Mobility: You mentioned that the foreskin appears to be fixed and does not move as it typically would. This could be due to the surgical technique used, which may involve suturing the foreskin or surrounding tissues to promote healing and maintain the curvature correction. It is not uncommon for the skin to feel tight or restricted initially. As the healing progresses, you may notice increased mobility in the foreskin. However, this can take time, and it is essential to be patient.
3. Timeframe for Recovery: Healing can vary significantly from person to person. While the outer skin may appear healed, the underlying tissues may still be in the process of recovery. It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include avoiding certain activities that could stress the surgical site, such as vigorous sexual activity or heavy lifting.
4. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are crucial to assess the healing process. During these visits, your doctor can evaluate the surgical site and provide guidance on when it is safe to resume normal activities, including sexual activity. If you have concerns about the mobility of your foreskin or any other issues, do not hesitate to bring them up during your appointments.
5. Expectations for the Future: As the healing progresses, you should gradually regain normal function and mobility in the area. If the foreskin remains fixed after a few months, it may be worth discussing with your surgeon, as they can provide insights into whether this is a normal part of the healing process or if further intervention is needed.
6. Managing Discomfort: If you experience any discomfort or tightness, gentle stretching exercises may help, but these should be approached with caution and ideally under the guidance of your healthcare provider. Avoid any forceful manipulation of the area, as this could lead to complications.
7. Psychological Aspects: It is also important to consider the psychological impact of surgery and recovery. Many patients experience anxiety about their healing process and the outcome of the surgery. Open communication with your healthcare provider can help alleviate concerns and provide reassurance.
In conclusion, while it is normal to have concerns about the healing process after penile curvature surgery, it is essential to remain patient and follow your surgeon's recommendations. If you notice any unusual symptoms or if the foreskin remains fixed for an extended period, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your recovery is a process, and with time, you should see improvements in both comfort and function.
