Numbness of the glans penis?

Hello, Dr.
Yeh.
Recently, my penis, particularly the glans, seems to have a tingling sensation that comes and goes, almost like there's blood flowing inside.
When I touch it, I can feel a slight tremor (not visible to the naked eye).
I remember experiencing something similar a few years ago, but it lasted only a day or two.
This time, it has been almost twenty days.
The last two or three days, the tingling has decreased, and it feels like it’s getting better, but there’s still a little bit of it.
What could be causing this? I’m not sure which specialist to see...
Please help me!

Understanding persistent numbness in the glans (the head of the penis) can be concerning, and it's important to consider various potential causes and solutions. The symptoms you describe—intermittent numbness, a sensation of blood flow, and slight tremors—can be attributed to several factors, including nerve compression, vascular issues, or even psychological factors.

Possible Causes
1. Nerve Compression or Irritation: The glans is richly supplied with nerves, and any compression or irritation can lead to numbness or tingling sensations. This can occur due to prolonged pressure from sitting, tight clothing, or even certain sexual positions. Conditions such as diabetes can also lead to peripheral neuropathy, which may cause similar symptoms.

2. Vascular Issues: The sensation of blood flow you describe could indicate a vascular issue. If there is intermittent reduced blood flow to the area, it may cause numbness or a tingling sensation. Conditions such as atherosclerosis or other circulatory problems could potentially lead to such symptoms.

3. Infections or Inflammatory Conditions: Infections, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can cause inflammation and lead to numbness or discomfort in the genital area. Conditions like balanitis (inflammation of the glans) can also cause similar symptoms.

4. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress can manifest physically, leading to sensations of numbness or tingling. If you have been experiencing increased stress or anxiety, it might contribute to your symptoms.

5. Previous Medical History: Since you mentioned that you experienced similar symptoms in the past, it’s worth considering whether there is an underlying chronic condition that could be contributing to these recurrent symptoms.

Recommended Actions
1. Consult a Specialist: Given the nature of your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult a urologist. Urologists specialize in male reproductive health and can provide a thorough examination to rule out any underlying conditions.

2. Diagnostic Tests: Your doctor may recommend tests such as nerve conduction studies or imaging studies to assess for any nerve damage or vascular issues. Blood tests may also be necessary to check for diabetes or other metabolic conditions.

3. Lifestyle Modifications: If nerve compression is suspected, consider adjusting your sitting habits, wearing looser clothing, and avoiding prolonged pressure on the area. Regular exercise can also improve circulation and overall nerve health.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any associated activities. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

5. Stress Management: If you suspect that anxiety may be contributing to your symptoms, consider stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or speaking with a mental health professional.

6. Follow-Up: Since your symptoms have persisted for nearly twenty days, it’s important to follow up with a healthcare provider if they do not resolve or if they worsen. Persistent symptoms warrant further investigation to ensure there are no serious underlying issues.

Conclusion
Persistent numbness in the glans can arise from various causes, including nerve compression, vascular issues, infections, or psychological factors. It is crucial to consult a urologist for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management. By addressing the symptoms early and following the recommended steps, you can work towards finding relief and ensuring your overall health.
