Taking pain relievers during pregnancy?
I am about 7 months pregnant.
Due to tooth pain in the middle of the night and being unable to seek medical attention, I took a pain reliever called Voern 50mg.
Is there any risk associated with this? Thank you for your response.

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology
Hello: Voren is classified as a Category B medication for use during pregnancy, with pregnancy categories ranging from A, B, C, D, to X.
The higher the category, the greater the risk.
This medication should be avoided during the early stages of pregnancy for safety reasons, and caution should be exercised if used at seven months.
Since you have already taken it, there is no need to worry, but please ensure to monitor your condition moving forward.
Remember that you are currently pregnant, and any medication should only be taken with a prescription from an obstetrician for safety.
Finally, I wish you joy as you prepare for the arrival of your little one.
Stay safe and happy.
Bye.

When it comes to taking painkillers during pregnancy, it is essential to approach the matter with caution and informed decision-making. The safety of any medication during pregnancy can vary significantly based on the type of drug, the timing of its use during the pregnancy, and the individual health circumstances of the mother.
In your case, you mentioned taking a painkiller named "voern" (which I assume refers to a medication containing a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID). Generally, the use of NSAIDs, particularly in the third trimester, is discouraged due to potential risks to both the mother and the developing fetus. These risks can include complications such as premature closure of the ductus arteriosus (a vital blood vessel in the fetus), which can lead to serious cardiovascular issues after birth. Additionally, NSAIDs can affect kidney function in the fetus and may lead to low amniotic fluid levels.
If you are in your seventh month of pregnancy and experiencing severe dental pain, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider or obstetrician as soon as possible. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and may recommend safer alternatives for pain relief. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is often considered a safer option for pain relief during pregnancy, but it should still be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Moreover, it is important to consider the underlying cause of your dental pain. If it is due to an infection or a dental issue that requires treatment, addressing the root cause is vital. Delaying dental care can lead to more significant problems, not just for you but also for your baby. Dental health is crucial during pregnancy, and many dental procedures can be safely performed while pregnant, especially in the second trimester.
In summary, while taking painkillers during pregnancy can sometimes be necessary, it is essential to choose the right medication and to do so under medical supervision. Always consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy, especially if you are experiencing pain that requires treatment. They can help you weigh the risks and benefits and ensure the safety of both you and your baby.
