Can a person with kidney stones engage in sexual activity?
Hello Dr.
Liu,
Here’s the situation: Last Tuesday morning, my boyfriend got up to urinate, and because it was dark, he wasn't sure if there was blood in his urine.
By around 7 or 8 AM, he went to urinate again and confirmed there was a bit of blood in his urine, but he said it didn't hurt much.
Later, at around 4 PM, he called from the Luodong Hospital to say he was there (he is currently in Yilan for military training).
On Wednesday, his superior took him to the Tri-Service General Hospital for further examination.
A couple of days later, he returned to the Tri-Service General Hospital for more tests, and during those days, he mentioned that he wasn't experiencing any pain and seemed to have no blood in his urine.
This Friday, he is scheduled to go back to review his test results.
I would like to ask if this could be kidney stones? And is it safe for him to engage in sexual activity?
Thank you, doctor.
I appreciate your help! ^^

Is it definitely a kidney stone? Of course, a thorough examination is necessary, but it has nothing to do with "sexual" matters.

When it comes to kidney stones, the question of whether one can engage in sexual activity is a common concern. Kidney stones can cause a variety of symptoms, including hematuria (blood in urine), pain, and urinary frequency. In your boyfriend's case, the initial presence of blood in the urine, followed by a lack of pain and subsequent medical evaluations, suggests that he may have experienced a kidney stone episode. However, the absence of pain and blood in the urine at this time is a positive sign, indicating that the stone may have passed or is no longer causing significant irritation.
Regarding sexual activity, it is generally considered safe to engage in sex after experiencing kidney stones, provided that the individual feels comfortable and does not have any ongoing symptoms such as severe pain or discomfort. The key factors to consider include:
1. Current Symptoms: If your boyfriend is currently asymptomatic and has no pain or blood in his urine, it is likely safe for him to engage in sexual activity. However, if he experiences any discomfort or unusual symptoms during or after sex, it would be wise to stop and consult a healthcare provider.
2. Medical Advice: Since your boyfriend is under medical care and will be receiving further evaluations, it is essential to follow the advice of his healthcare team. They can provide personalized recommendations based on his specific condition and treatment plan.
3. Hydration and Recovery: After experiencing kidney stones, it is crucial to stay well-hydrated. Drinking plenty of fluids can help prevent the formation of new stones and support overall urinary health. This is particularly important if he has undergone any procedures, such as lithotripsy or the placement of a stent.
4. Potential Risks: While kidney stones themselves do not directly affect sexual function, the discomfort associated with them can lead to anxiety or reluctance to engage in sexual activity. Additionally, if there are any complications from the stones or their treatment, such as infections, these could impact sexual health.
5. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments are essential for monitoring kidney health and preventing future stone formation. Your boyfriend should discuss any concerns about sexual activity with his healthcare provider during these visits.
In summary, if your boyfriend is feeling well and has no ongoing symptoms, it is generally safe for him to engage in sexual activity. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution and consult with his healthcare provider for tailored advice. Maintaining open communication about health concerns and following medical guidance will help ensure both his physical and emotional well-being during this time.
