After the removal of a sebaceous cyst..?
I have a large sebaceous cyst under my armpit, which became inflamed and swollen earlier, so I had it surgically removed last week.
The wound is currently healing, with no bleeding and it feels dry, but I noticed that the wound is quite deep (stitched with three sutures), with a long protrusion in the middle and a groove on either side.
There is also a significant amount of bruising around the wound, which feels a bit hard when pressed, and some bruising is scattered in more distant areas.
Is this normal? Additionally, I noticed that the skin around the wound—from my shoulder to my upper arm—has turned quite yellow.
Is this also normal? How long will it take for these symptoms or scars to disappear?

Dr. Lin Kecheng reply Surgery
After the surgical removal of an axillary sebaceous cyst, it is common for patients to experience bruising or even the formation of blood clots.
Your situation is similar to that of most patients and is considered normal.
The bruising typically resolves gradually over two weeks; however, before it completely dissipates, the color will change from deep purple to light purple, then to yellow, and finally return to the original skin tone.
The scar tissue usually softens over the course of about a month.
Wishing you good health and happiness.

Post-surgery care is crucial for ensuring a smooth recovery, especially after a cyst removal procedure. It’s great to hear that you had the surgery and are on the path to healing. Let’s address your concerns regarding the symptoms you are experiencing.
First, it’s normal for the surgical site to have some bruising and swelling after the procedure. Bruising occurs when small blood vessels are damaged during surgery, leading to blood leaking into the surrounding tissues. This can create a hard area around the incision, which you described. The presence of bruising, especially if it is localized around the incision site, is generally expected and should gradually resolve over time. Typically, bruising can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to fade, depending on the extent of the bruising and your body’s healing response.
Regarding the yellow discoloration of the skin from your shoulder to your upper arm, this is likely related to the bruising as well. As bruises heal, they often change color, transitioning from red to purple, and then to yellow or green as the body breaks down the blood that has pooled in the tissues. This yellowing is a normal part of the healing process and should also resolve within a week or two.
The depth of the incision and the presence of stitches are also common after cyst removal. It’s important to keep the area clean and dry to prevent infection. You should follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, which may include keeping the area covered, avoiding certain activities, and possibly using prescribed ointments or medications to aid in healing.
In terms of the timeline for recovery, the initial healing of the skin may take about 1-2 weeks, but complete healing of the underlying tissues can take longer, sometimes several weeks to a few months. The stitches will typically be removed within 7-14 days post-surgery, depending on your surgeon's assessment.
If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge from the wound, or if you experience fever or worsening pain, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider immediately. These could be signs that require further evaluation and treatment.
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing, including bruising and yellow discoloration, are generally normal after cyst removal surgery. They should gradually improve over the next couple of weeks. However, always feel free to reach out to your surgeon or healthcare provider if you have any concerns or if your symptoms change. They can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your recovery progresses smoothly.
