Circumcision Costs and Procedures in Taiwan: A Guide - Urology

I would like to inquire about the cost and methods of circumcision?

Hello, Dr.
Hsu: Every time I take a shower, I make sure to retract my foreskin for cleaning, but sometimes I forget to pull it back when urinating.
Can I request to undergo a circumcision surgery at my own expense? Generally, the cost for circumcision at public hospitals in Taiwan is around NT$5,000 to NT$8,000.
Is this price consistent across all public hospitals in Taiwan? You mentioned laser surgery; how much does that typically cost, and do public hospitals offer this service? What types of circumcision procedures are currently available? Will there be a lot of bleeding during the procedure, and can I shower afterward? How long does it usually take to recover?

Xiao Zong, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/10/21

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, regarding your request for a self-funded surgery, it should be possible.
(However, personally, I do not prefer to perform such non-essential surgeries.) The cost for a circumcision ranges from 5,000 to 8,000 TWD, which is not the pricing set by public hospitals; I am referring to the surgical fees at most medical institutions.
Of course, the costs for circumcision vary among hospitals (including public hospitals) in different regions.
Laser circumcision is not available at every public hospital, as it requires specific laser equipment.
The general cost might be around 15,000 TWD (this is my estimate, as our facility does not have the relevant equipment).
During the surgery, bleeding is usually minimal, approximately a few cc.
After the surgery, you should avoid soaking in water for about two weeks, depending on the healing of the wound.
It is best to refrain from sexual activity for at least two months to prevent the wound from reopening or swelling, which typically takes about 3 to 10 days, depending on individual constitution.
Pain tolerance varies from person to person.

Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin from the penis. In Taiwan, this procedure is often performed for various reasons, including medical necessity, hygiene, or personal preference. If you are considering circumcision, it is important to understand the costs, procedures, and recovery associated with this surgery.

Costs of Circumcision in Taiwan
The cost of circumcision in Taiwan can vary depending on the hospital or clinic you choose. As you mentioned, the typical self-paying cost for circumcision at public hospitals can range from NT$5,000 to NT$8,000. This price range is generally consistent across various public health institutions, but it is always advisable to check with the specific hospital for the most accurate and up-to-date pricing.
In addition to the basic circumcision procedure, there are options for laser circumcision, which is a more advanced technique that may offer benefits such as reduced bleeding and quicker recovery times. The cost for laser circumcision can be higher than traditional methods, often ranging from NT$10,000 to NT$20,000, depending on the facility and the complexity of the procedure.

Procedures and Techniques
There are several techniques for performing circumcision, including:
1. Traditional Surgical Method: This involves the use of a scalpel to remove the foreskin. It is the most common method and is typically performed under local anesthesia.

2. Laser Circumcision: This method uses a laser to remove the foreskin, which can minimize bleeding and may lead to a quicker recovery.
3. Electrocautery: This technique uses heat to cut tissue and seal blood vessels, reducing bleeding during the procedure.

Regardless of the method chosen, circumcision is generally a safe procedure when performed by a qualified surgeon.

Blood Loss and Recovery
One of the common concerns regarding circumcision is the potential for bleeding. While some bleeding is expected during and after the procedure, significant blood loss is rare when the surgery is performed correctly. Surgeons take precautions to minimize bleeding, and patients are monitored closely during recovery.

Post-operative care is crucial for a smooth recovery. After the procedure, patients are typically advised to keep the area clean and dry. You can usually shower after the first 24 hours, but it is important to avoid soaking in baths or swimming pools until the area has healed.

Recovery Time
The recovery time after circumcision can vary from person to person. Generally, patients can expect to return to normal activities within a week, but full healing may take several weeks. It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing and to avoid complications.

Consultation with a Doctor
If you are considering circumcision, it is advisable to consult with a urologist or a surgeon who specializes in this procedure. They can provide you with detailed information about the risks, benefits, and what to expect during and after the surgery. Additionally, they can assess your specific situation and determine if circumcision is appropriate for you.

In summary, circumcision in Taiwan is a common procedure with a range of costs and techniques available. Understanding the options and discussing them with a healthcare provider will help you make an informed decision. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking professional medical advice tailored to your individual needs.
