Hello, regarding circumcision?

Hello, I would like to inquire about getting a circumcision due to phimosis in Pingtung.
However, due to work commitments, I don't have time for the procedure.
Is it possible to schedule the circumcision during the Lunar New Year? How long does the recovery take, and will it affect my ability to work? What is the current out-of-pocket cost for the circumcision?

Ka Shi Duo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2011/12/02

Dr. Liu Jiaju reply Urology

Circumcision surgery is performed under local anesthesia and takes approximately 40 minutes.
Hospitalization and suture removal are not required.
The wound typically heals in about 10 to 14 days, during which time bathing is allowed, and normal activities can be resumed.
The out-of-pocket cost is around 4,500 to 5,000 NTD, depending on the actual materials used.
Please note that the urology department may be closed from New Year's Eve to the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.
It is recommended to come in advance to discuss with the physician and schedule the surgery.

More Info

Circumcision, or the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis, is a common procedure that can be performed for various reasons, including medical, cultural, or personal preferences. In Pingtung, as in many other places, there are several factors to consider if you are thinking about undergoing this procedure, especially if you are planning to do it around the New Year holiday.

Availability of Services
In Pingtung, many hospitals and clinics offer circumcision services. It is advisable to contact local healthcare providers in advance to check their availability, especially around the holiday season when many medical facilities may have altered hours or may be closed. Some hospitals may require an appointment, while others may accept walk-ins. It is best to confirm this ahead of time to ensure you can get the procedure done when you want.

Recovery Time
The recovery time after circumcision can vary from person to person, but generally, it takes about one to two weeks for the initial healing to occur. During this time, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which are normal parts of the healing process. Most individuals can return to light activities within a few days, but it is recommended to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or vigorous exercise, for at least a week or until your doctor gives you the all-clear.

If your job involves physical labor, you may need to take additional time off to ensure proper healing. It’s important to listen to your body and not rush back into work if you are still experiencing pain or discomfort.

Cost of Circumcision
The cost of circumcision can vary widely depending on the healthcare provider, the facility, and whether the procedure is covered by insurance. In Taiwan, circumcision is often considered a self-pay procedure unless there are specific medical indications. As of my last update, the cost for circumcision in Taiwan can range from NT$10,000 to NT$30,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and the facility. It is advisable to inquire directly with the hospital or clinic for the most accurate pricing and to confirm whether any additional fees may apply.

Considerations Before the Procedure
Before undergoing circumcision, it is essential to have a thorough consultation with a healthcare provider. They will assess your medical history, discuss the reasons for the procedure, and explain the potential risks and benefits. Common risks associated with circumcision include bleeding, infection, and complications related to anesthesia. Your doctor will provide you with pre-operative instructions, which may include guidelines on eating and drinking before the procedure.

Conclusion
If you are considering circumcision in Pingtung, it is crucial to plan ahead, especially if you want to have the procedure done during the New Year holiday. Make sure to contact local healthcare providers to check their availability, understand the recovery process, and confirm the costs involved. Taking these steps will help ensure that you have a smooth experience and can return to your regular activities as soon as possible. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional to address any concerns or questions you may have regarding the procedure.
