Myopia laser treatment
Hello: After undergoing laser surgery for myopia, what types of food and drinks should I consume to aid in recovery and for future maintenance? Thank you.
Zhenzhen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/10/28
Dr. Huang Shuli reply Nutrition
Zhenzhen: Hello! Regardless of the size of the surgery, there will be wounds, and the natural healing response can be divided into three phases: the inflammatory phase, the proliferative phase, and the remodeling phase.
During these phases, it is essential to supplement various nutrients, such as proteins, vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, niacin, and pantothenic acid, as well as several minerals.
Fortunately, as long as the diet is balanced, adequate nutrition can be obtained.
Therefore, after surgery, a balanced diet should be the foundation (the six major food groups: grains, dairy, meat, fish, eggs, legumes, vegetables, fruits, and fats should not be neglected).
Avoid spicy and overly salty foods, and remember to use eye drops as prescribed.
Wishing you all the best.

More Info
After undergoing LASIK surgery, it is essential to focus on a balanced diet that supports healing and overall eye health. The recovery process involves several stages, including inflammation, repair, and remodeling of the tissues. During this time, proper nutrition plays a crucial role in facilitating these processes.
Foods to Include for Recovery:
1. High-Protein Foods: Protein is vital for tissue repair and regeneration. Incorporate lean meats (such as chicken and turkey), fish, eggs, dairy products (like yogurt and cheese), and plant-based proteins (such as beans, lentils, and tofu) into your diet. Aim for a variety of protein sources to ensure you get all essential amino acids.
2. Fruits and Vegetables: These are rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support healing. Specifically, focus on:
- Vitamin C-rich foods: Citrus fruits (oranges, lemons), strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli can help with collagen formation and tissue repair.
- Vitamin A-rich foods: Carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kale are beneficial for eye health and can support recovery. Vitamin A is crucial for maintaining healthy vision and may help reduce the risk of complications.
3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Foods high in omega-3s, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel), walnuts, and flaxseeds, can help reduce inflammation and promote healing. Omega-3s are also beneficial for eye health, potentially reducing the risk of dry eyes post-surgery.
4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health and can aid in the recovery process. Water is the best choice, but herbal teas and broths can also contribute to your fluid intake. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as they can lead to dehydration.
5. Whole Grains: Foods like brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat bread, and oats provide essential nutrients and energy. They are also a good source of fiber, which aids in digestion and overall health.
Foods to Avoid:
1. Spicy and Irritating Foods: After LASIK surgery, it is advisable to avoid spicy foods, as they can cause discomfort and may lead to increased tearing or irritation.
2. Alcohol: Alcohol can lead to dehydration and may interfere with the healing process. It is best to avoid alcohol for at least a few days post-surgery.
3. Highly Processed Foods: Foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats can promote inflammation and should be limited. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods instead.
4. Caffeine: While moderate caffeine consumption is generally acceptable, excessive intake can lead to dehydration and may exacerbate dry eye symptoms, which some patients experience after LASIK.
Additional Tips for Eye Care Post-Surgery:
- Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Adhere to your surgeon’s recommendations regarding eye drops and medications. These are crucial for preventing infection and promoting healing.
- Rest Your Eyes: Limit screen time and give your eyes regular breaks to reduce strain.
- Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses when outdoors to shield your eyes from UV rays and dust, which can irritate healing tissues.
In conclusion, a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and healthy fats, combined with adequate hydration, is essential for recovery after LASIK surgery. Avoiding irritants and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will further support your healing process and contribute to long-term eye health. Always consult with your healthcare provider or a nutritionist for personalized dietary advice tailored to your specific needs and recovery plan.
