Finger injury caused by a door?
I injured my middle finger today by getting it caught in a door.
My hand feels numb, and there is a crack and bleeding next to the nail, and it seems like the skin is broken as well.
Will my nail fall off? Also, why does the tip of my finger feel numb?

I'm sorry to hear about your finger injury. It sounds quite painful and concerning, especially with the symptoms you're experiencing. Let's break down your situation regarding the nerve damage and nail concerns.
When you injure your finger, especially in a way that involves crushing or pinching, there are several potential outcomes. The symptoms you're describing—numbness or a tingling sensation in the finger, along with a split or bleeding around the nail—suggest that there may be some nerve involvement. The fingers are rich in nerve endings, which makes them particularly sensitive to injury.
1. Nerve Damage: The numbness or tingling sensation you're feeling could indicate that the injury has affected the nerves in your finger. This is not uncommon in crush injuries, where the force can damage the nerve fibers. Depending on the severity of the injury, the nerve may be bruised or, in more severe cases, partially or completely severed. If the nerve is only bruised, it may heal on its own over time, but this can take weeks to months. If the nerve is severed, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore function.
2. Nail Concerns: As for your nail, injuries to the nail bed can lead to a variety of outcomes. If the injury is significant enough, it can disrupt the growth of the nail, leading to nail loss. However, if the nail bed is not severely damaged, the nail may eventually grow back, although it might take several months. The presence of blood or fluid under the nail (a condition known as a subungual hematoma) can also cause the nail to lift or fall off.
3. Sensitivity and Healing: The "numb" feeling in your finger can also be attributed to swelling or inflammation around the injury site, which can compress the nerves and lead to altered sensations. This sensitivity is often temporary, but it can take time for the nerves to heal and for normal sensation to return.
4. What to Do Next: Given the symptoms you're experiencing, it's important to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can assess the extent of the injury, check for any signs of infection, and determine if there is significant nerve damage. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an X-ray, to rule out fractures or other complications.
5. Self-Care and Recovery: In the meantime, you can help manage your symptoms by keeping the injured finger elevated to reduce swelling, applying ice packs intermittently, and avoiding activities that could further irritate the injury. Over-the-counter pain relief medications may also help alleviate discomfort.
6. Follow-Up: If you notice increasing pain, swelling, or any signs of infection (such as redness, warmth, or pus), it's crucial to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, while it’s possible that your nail may be at risk of falling off due to the injury, the numbness you're experiencing is likely related to nerve involvement. It's essential to have a medical professional evaluate your injury to provide appropriate treatment and guidance for recovery.
