Sitting in a chair, I can feel a sensation near my buttocks (around the anus) as if there is a heartbeat there?

Hello, doctor.
I know this question might seem strange, but I am really troubled.
I am currently 34 weeks pregnant, and while sitting in a chair, I sometimes feel a noticeable pulsation near my anus, beating very quickly, which makes it uncomfortable to sit.
Why is this happening? Is this something others experience? What should I do? I look forward to your response!

Hello: If this pulsation is in sync with your own heartbeat, it is likely the small artery pulsation near the anus.
You may want to ask your doctor to check it during your next prenatal visit.
Thank you! Hsinchu City Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Experiencing pulsations near the anus during pregnancy can be concerning, but it is important to understand that many bodily changes occur during this time, and some of them can lead to unusual sensations. At 34 weeks pregnant, your body is undergoing significant changes as it prepares for labor and delivery.
The sensation you are describing could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is increased blood flow to the pelvic area, which is common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and the growing uterus. This increased blood flow can lead to heightened sensitivity and unusual sensations, including pulsations. Additionally, as the uterus expands, it can put pressure on surrounding structures, including blood vessels and nerves, which may also contribute to the feeling of pulsations.

Another potential cause could be related to the increased activity of the fetus. As the baby grows, its movements can sometimes be felt in unexpected areas, including the lower abdomen and pelvic region. While this is typically felt as kicks or rolls, it can sometimes be perceived as pulsations, especially if the baby is positioned in a way that puts pressure on certain areas.

It is also worth considering that the sensation might be related to muscle contractions. During pregnancy, especially in the later stages, women may experience Braxton Hicks contractions, which are practice contractions that can cause tightness or pulsating sensations in the abdomen and pelvic area. While these contractions are usually not painful, they can create sensations that might be interpreted as pulsations.

However, it is essential to differentiate between normal sensations and those that may indicate a problem. If the pulsations are accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, bleeding, or significant changes in fetal movement, it is crucial to seek medical attention. Additionally, if you feel that the pulsations are causing you discomfort or anxiety, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination and provide reassurance or treatment if necessary.

In summary, while feeling pulsations near the anus during pregnancy can be disconcerting, it is often a normal part of the many changes your body is experiencing. Increased blood flow, pressure from the growing uterus, and fetal movements are all potential explanations. However, if you have any concerns or if the sensation is accompanied by other troubling symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and support. They are there to help ensure both your health and the health of your baby during this important time.
