Penile Issues: Dark Spots After Intercourse Explained - Urology

Foreskin issues

After having intercourse with my girlfriend, I noticed a dark spot behind my foreskin.
I'm not sure what caused it.
Could it be due to the condom being too tight or from being too rough? Can I continue to have intercourse in this condition? Please help me, thank you.

That's really alarming! It could be a bruise, but there are many possible causes.
However, seeing is believing, so I recommend visiting a hospital to have a urologist examine it in person.

More Info

When it comes to noticing dark spots on the penis after intercourse, there are several potential explanations that can range from benign to more serious conditions. It's important to consider the context of the symptoms, including any discomfort, pain, or changes in sensation, as well as the duration of the symptoms.

1. Bruising or Petechiae: One common cause of dark spots after sexual activity is bruising, which can occur if there was excessive friction or pressure during intercourse. This can lead to small blood vessels breaking, resulting in petechiae (tiny red or purple spots) or larger bruises. If the condom was too tight or if there was vigorous activity, this could contribute to such bruising.

2. Frictional Injuries: The skin on the penis, particularly around the foreskin, is sensitive. If there was a lot of friction during intercourse, it could lead to irritation or minor injuries, which may appear as dark spots or discoloration. This is often accompanied by some redness or swelling.

3. Infections or Skin Conditions: Certain infections, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can cause changes in the skin, including dark spots. Conditions like folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) or other dermatological issues could also manifest as dark spots. If the dark spots are accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or unusual discharge, it is crucial to seek medical attention.

4. Allergic Reactions: Sometimes, the materials used in condoms (such as latex) can cause allergic reactions, leading to irritation and discoloration. If you suspect this might be the case, consider switching to a different type of condom, such as those made from polyurethane or polyisoprene.

5. Peyronie's Disease: In some cases, dark spots can be associated with Peyronie's disease, which involves the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, causing curved, painful erections. However, this condition typically presents with more pronounced symptoms than just dark spots.

What to Do Next
- Observation: If the dark spot is not accompanied by pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms, it may be safe to observe it for a few days. Many minor injuries will heal on their own.

- Avoid Further Irritation: Until you have a clearer understanding of the cause, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or injury.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the dark spot persists, changes in appearance, or is accompanied by other symptoms (such as pain, swelling, or discharge), it is important to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests to rule out infections or other conditions.

- Safe Practices: In the future, ensure that condoms fit properly and consider using lubrication to reduce friction during intercourse. This can help prevent similar issues from occurring.

In summary, while dark spots on the penis after intercourse can be concerning, they are often due to minor injuries or bruising. However, if you have any doubts or if the symptoms worsen, it is always best to seek medical advice to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
