Questions related to surgery after a clavicle fracture?
Hello Doctor: I suffered a left clavicle fracture due to a car accident and underwent surgery with metal screws for stabilization.
It has been two weeks since the surgery, but I have been experiencing persistent numbness around my left shoulder and a lack of sensation.
Additionally, there is a yellow discoloration near my chest, and it feels hard when I press on it.
I would like to know if this is normal or if it could be related to poor blood circulation.
Is there a way to improve the numbness and lack of sensation? Thank you.

Numbness near the shoulder after clavicle fracture surgery may be due to the impact from the injury or a common occurrence related to the surgical incision.
This sensation may gradually improve over time.
The feeling of hardness could be attributed to hematoma or swelling.

After undergoing surgery for a clavicle fracture, experiencing numbness and discoloration in the shoulder area can be concerning. It’s important to understand that these symptoms can occur post-surgery for various reasons, and while some may be normal, others may require further evaluation.
Firstly, numbness in the shoulder and arm area can be attributed to nerve irritation or compression. During surgery, the positioning of the arm and the surgical manipulation can sometimes lead to temporary nerve issues. The brachial plexus, a network of nerves that innervates the shoulder, arm, and hand, can be affected during surgery or due to swelling in the area. This can result in sensations of numbness, tingling, or weakness. In most cases, these symptoms improve as the swelling decreases and the nerves recover, but it can take time.
The yellow discoloration you are noticing near your chest is likely due to bruising, which is common after surgery. Bruising occurs when blood vessels are damaged, allowing blood to leak into the surrounding tissues. This can create a hard feeling in the area as the body begins to heal and reabsorb the blood. While bruising can be alarming, it is typically a normal part of the healing process. However, if the discoloration worsens or if you notice increasing hardness or swelling, it would be wise to consult your physician.
Regarding your concerns about blood circulation, it is possible that swelling from the surgery could affect circulation temporarily. Elevating your arm and shoulder can help reduce swelling and improve blood flow. Gentle range-of-motion exercises, as advised by your healthcare provider, can also promote circulation and help alleviate numbness. However, it is crucial to follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding activity levels and rehabilitation exercises to avoid compromising your recovery.
If the numbness persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, weakness, or changes in skin color or temperature, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. These could indicate complications such as compartment syndrome or issues related to the surgical hardware.
In summary, while some numbness and discoloration can be normal following clavicle surgery, it is important to monitor your symptoms closely. Maintaining communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring a smooth recovery. They may recommend physical therapy or other interventions to help improve your symptoms and restore function to your shoulder and arm. Remember, recovery from surgery can take time, and being patient while following your doctor's advice will be beneficial in the long run.
