Circumcision

Hello, I had a circumcision over three weeks ago, but the stitches haven't come out yet.
How long does it usually take for them to dissolve? I've also heard that the stitches dissolve when they come into contact with water, but I haven't really used water until the second week.
Do I need to go to the hospital for an examination?
Additionally, I have another question: when I am cooking fried rice, I tend to ejaculate quite a bit during foreplay, but I still reach orgasm and ejaculate during intercourse.
Is there something wrong with me? What treatment options are available?

Xiao Xia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/02/20

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, Happy New Year! Generally, the sutures will start to be absorbed within 1-2 weeks and will typically fall out on their own within 2-4 weeks.
Of course, if you keep the area very dry, it may delay the absorption time of the sutures.
If you are concerned, I usually recommend having the sutures removed at the outpatient clinic if it has been more than 3 weeks.
After all, having sutures left in place is not ideal, and when the wound has healed but the sutures remain, it can sometimes lead to infection.
During foreplay, what is usually released is not semen, but rather some lubricating fluid.
This is a normal phenomenon.
Note: After circumcision, it is best to wait at least 2 months before engaging in sexual activity, as the wound can easily reopen.
I apologize for the delayed response due to the New Year holiday.
Sincerely, Dr.

After circumcision, it is common for patients to have concerns regarding the healing process, particularly regarding the dissolution of stitches and any changes in sexual function. Let's address your questions one by one.

Stitch Dissolution
Typically, the stitches used in circumcision are either absorbable or non-absorbable. Absorbable stitches are designed to dissolve on their own over time, usually within 1 to 3 weeks post-surgery. Non-absorbable stitches, on the other hand, need to be removed by a healthcare professional. Since you mentioned that it has been over three weeks and your stitches have not dissolved, it is important to consider a few factors:
1. Type of Stitches: If your stitches are absorbable, they should start to dissolve within the expected timeframe. If they are non-absorbable, you will need to return to your healthcare provider for removal.

2. Water Exposure: While absorbable stitches can typically handle exposure to water, it is advisable to follow your doctor's instructions regarding bathing and cleaning the area. If you started exposing the area to water only after two weeks, it may not have affected the dissolution process significantly.

3. Signs of Infection: If you notice any signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, discharge, or fever), you should seek medical attention promptly.
Given your concerns, it would be prudent to schedule a follow-up appointment with your healthcare provider to assess the stitches and ensure proper healing.

Ejaculation Concerns
Regarding your second question about ejaculation and sexual function, it is not uncommon for men to experience changes in ejaculation following circumcision. Here are some points to consider:
1. Ejaculation During Foreplay: It is normal for some men to experience ejaculation during foreplay or stimulation. This can be influenced by various factors, including arousal levels and sensitivity.

2. Ejaculation During Intercourse: If you are experiencing ejaculation during intercourse, this is generally considered normal. However, if you feel that the amount of fluid is excessive or if you are experiencing discomfort, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

3. Potential Issues: If you are concerned about changes in your sexual function, such as premature ejaculation or changes in orgasm intensity, it is important to communicate these concerns with a healthcare professional. They can provide guidance and potential treatment options, which may include behavioral techniques, counseling, or medications.

Conclusion
In summary, if your stitches have not dissolved after three weeks, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine whether they are absorbable or need to be removed. Additionally, regarding your ejaculation concerns, if you feel that there are significant changes or discomfort, discussing this with a healthcare professional can help address any underlying issues and provide reassurance.

It is essential to prioritize your health and well-being, so do not hesitate to seek medical advice when you have concerns about your recovery or sexual health.
