At nearly 8 months pregnant, experiencing green discharge?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you a question: I am currently almost 8 months pregnant (I will be 8 months on Saturday).
Last night, when I got up to use the bathroom, I noticed some greenish discharge that was slightly thick and had some blood streaks in it (but not a lot, just a few spots of blood).
I also experienced some mild itching in the vaginal area while I was sleeping, but it wasn't very intense.
This morning, after using the bathroom, I noticed there was still some green discharge, but it was only a little bit.
After two hours, I checked again and there was no green discharge left.
This is the second time I have experienced this since becoming pregnant; the first time was when I was over 6 months along, but it was only a small amount, so I didn't pay much attention to it.
However, last night the amount was quite significant! Should I see a doctor? Thank you, doctor!

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the green discharge during your late pregnancy. It’s understandable to feel anxious about any changes in your body, especially during this important time.
First and foremost, it’s essential to recognize that any unusual discharge during pregnancy should be taken seriously, particularly if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, irritation, or the presence of blood. In your case, the appearance of a light green, somewhat thick discharge with some blood streaks, along with mild itching, warrants a medical evaluation. While it’s possible that this could be related to normal changes in your body during pregnancy, it could also indicate an infection or other issues that need to be addressed.
Green discharge can sometimes be associated with bacterial vaginosis or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), both of which can pose risks during pregnancy if left untreated. Bacterial vaginosis, for instance, is caused by an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina and can lead to complications such as preterm labor if not managed properly. STIs can also have serious implications for both the mother and the baby, so it’s crucial to rule these out.
Given that you mentioned this is not the first occurrence of green discharge and that it has been accompanied by some blood, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider as soon as possible. They may perform a pelvic examination and possibly take samples for laboratory testing to determine the cause of the discharge. This will help ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment if necessary.
In terms of your overall health during pregnancy, it’s important to maintain regular prenatal check-ups. These visits allow your healthcare provider to monitor your health and the development of your baby, as well as address any concerns you may have. If you are experiencing discomfort or other symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your provider for guidance.
Additionally, if you are experiencing any other symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or a significant change in the amount or color of the discharge, seek medical attention promptly. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health and the health of your baby.
In summary, I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss the green discharge and any other symptoms you are experiencing. Early intervention can help prevent potential complications and ensure a healthier pregnancy outcome. Take care, and I wish you all the best as you approach the final stages of your pregnancy!
